Associate Professor, Elementary and Early Childhood Education
Dr. Hughes graduated from the State University of New York, Brockport, with B.A. in psychology and licensed to teach N-6. She completed her Masters in Special Education at Nazareth College, Rochester, NY. She spent 15 years as a classroom teacher working in general education, grades 1 and 2, and special education, grades 7-12. She worked as a staff developer for six years, helping school divisions align curriculum, instruction, and assessment. She returned to school herself in 1999 and completed her Ph.D. at the University of Virginia in 2002. Her professional interests include supporting beginning teachers and developing instructional skills that engage all learners. When she is not at JMU, you can find her with her husband, Doug, fixing up their 100 year farm house.
