The educational professional uses a variety of assessment techniques, both formal and informal, for varying purposes.
Teachers and other educational professionals assess students to gain an understanding of students’ knowledge, development, skills, attitudes, and values; to assign grades; to make decisions about appropriate content and objectives for students; and to determine when to employ alternative teaching methods. Effective teachers are able to use a variety of formal and informal assessment techniques, both through traditional and technological approaches that are appropriate to students’ social, emotional, cultural, and intellectual characteristics (e.g. observation, portfolios, student work, tests, performance tasks, projects, student self-assessment). Effective educational professionals continuously monitor, evaluate and document student progress in relation to identified instructional objectives and use assessment information to plan and modify curriculum, instruction and the learning environment. Other educational professionals value assessment and use systematic, regular, and effective mechanisms to assess school-based programs and activities; educators use assessment information to judge and evaluate improvements and make decisions regarding continual progress toward improved student learning and improved student educational experiences.
