James Madison University has a rich history in teacher preparation.

In its early years, it was known as
"The State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Harrisonburg"

Today, preparation of education professionals continues to be
the central mission of the College of Education.

The Professional Education Unit at James Madison University consists of  11 undergraduate and 11 graduate programs across 5 colleges to prepare teachers, school administrators, counselors, psychologists, and speech therapists for licensure or advanced studies in education.

The mission of the James Madison University professional education unit is to prepare caring, knowledgeable, skilled and reflective educators who believe that all students can learn and succeed. Our candidates and faculty are committed to lifelong learning and aspire to meet educational needs in a changing, pluralistic and democratic society.
