Hillendale Park, September 25th, 2010
The English Language Learner population is an important part of the exceptionalities foundational course (EXED 200), so students in this semester’s class volunteered at the 13th annual Harrisonburg International Festival http://www.harrisonburg-international-festival.org/online/. Many EXED 200 students volunteered at the playground or attended the event in Hillandale Park on September 25th. Several JMU students planned and led the Children's Activity Area for the festival. This included 9 children's activities designed around the event theme of Unity. Students also led storytelling, made peanut butter, and set up a face painting station.
The students worked with children and families to create 2 pieces of art that are on display outside of the Exceptional Education office. A wreath of hands and a wall hanging
created at the event by those who attended and visited the Children’s Activity area. These works of art reflect the event’s theme of “commUNITY” which celebrates the importance of us all coming together as one diverse community in order to live harmoniously and productively.
JMU students interacted with children and their families from more than 15 countries as over 7,000 people gathered to celebrate the diversity of our local region.
