  • The 2nd Annual Noftsinger Celebration of Madison Scholarship is being hosted as part of the May Symposium during a reception at the Forbes Center on Thursday, May 10th from 5:00 – 7:00 PM.  You may remember that last year, we gathered examples of scholarly activity from our faculty and had a very impressive display in the lobby of the Forbes Center.  We are soliciting examples for this year's event.  Please drop your work off in the Associate/Assistant  Deans' Office by Tuesday, May 8th at 5:00 PM.  We will be transporting them to the Forbes Center on Thursday morning, May 10th and setting up our display.  The artifacts will be brought back to our office after the reception and you will be able to retrieve them on Friday, May 11th.
  • The impressive poster session we  presented for NCATE certainly is evidence that we will once again have a rich display for the celebration. Thank you for helping us showcase the hard work of each of you by contributing to this event!    Please contact Peggy Shaeffer if you have any questions

August 6-10th

  • The Furious Flower Poetry Center’s 8th Annual Children’s Poetry Camp will be held on August 6-10, 2012 in Memorial Hall from 9:00a.m.to 2:00p.m.  The theme this year is “Words Light the Way.”  The goal of the Poetry Camp is to inspire children to explore all the ways they can be creative with words.  They can, of course, write the words, but they are also taught that they can use dance, art, acting, and music to express their poetic ideas.  There are seven teachers and fourteen counselors that will share their talent, enthusiasm, and creativity with the campers in seven different workshops (the campers get to choose four to participate in).  Each teacher comes at poetry in his/her own unique way.  Some of our workshop titles will give you an idea of the diversity of experiences—
  • Dragons, Dragons and Other Creatures That Never Were
  • Wild, Wonderful Writing!
  • Light Up the Stage
  • I Like to Move It, MOVE IT!
  • Rhythm Playground

  • We provide the campers with lunch and a snack each day.  The cost of the Poetry Camp is $50 for the week, but scholarships are available.  If you know of any children that would enjoy attending the camp, please visit our website at http://www.jmu.edu/furiousflower.  There, you will find a link to the Poetry Camp’s webpage with registration and workshop information.  If you have any questions, please contact Jill Wade at staleycj@jmu.edu or 568-8883
