Internships

How to Find an Internship

Internships can enhance your resume and job prospects and, in some cases, can be taken for academic credit. The hospitality and tourism management program is the only one that requires internship experience. However, if you join a CoB program, we strongly recommend that you pursue an internship for a number of reasons.

  •   An internship provides you with the opportunity to determine if your major is right for you.
  •   An internship allows you to apply your classroom experiences to practical scenarios.
  •   An internship can lead to an offer from a firm for an entry-level position after graduation.
  •   An internship gives you practical experience when interviewing for entry-level positions.
  •   An internship can build your confidence.
  •   An internship for credit can act as an elective course to fulfill requirements for your major.

If you are interested in pursuing an internship in your major for academic credit, you must contact the relevant internship coordinator to determine the prerequsites and registration procedure. The College of Business sets minimum requirements for all internships. Individual academic program requirements may exceed these, so make sure to contact the relevant program listed below for additional information.

You must meet the following CoB requirements to receive credit for your internship:

  •   Have at least junior standing.
  •   Earned a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 prior to the start of the internship.
  •   Have advance approval of internship from the faculty internship coordinator and the major program director.
  •   Register for course credit during the internship experience.
  •   Complete a minimum of 200 hours of work experience during the internship.
  •   Have your immediate supervisor submit at least one performance evaluation to the faculty internship coordinator.
  •   Submit a final written paper and participate in an exit interview with the faculty internship coordinator.

Internships in more than one program are permitted; however, double counting (i.e., receiving credit for one experience in more than one major) is not permitted.

Some CoB majors have additional internships requirements. Contact the appropriate internship coordinator for more information about interning for your academic program.
