Miarra Beall

Miarra BeallHometown: Montclair, VA

Major: Computer Information Systems

Year of graduation: 2015

What are some of your favorite hobbies? I enjoy working out, teaching group fitness classes at UREC, hanging with friends and family, watching movies and eating good food!

What is the most interesting experience you’ve ever had? Visiting Colombia for a month.  The lifestyle there was so different than in the U.S. It gave me some useful perspective on different cultures and sparked my interest in traveling the world.

What is one thing about you that most people wouldn’t know? I have two adorable nieces who were born on 9/9/9 and 12/12/12.

What do you wish someone had told you during freshman year? Figure out what you want to do early, pick your major and stick with it.  Also, don’t skimp on school supplies that will keep you organized, it’ll be worth it!

    

Brendan English

Hometown: Fairfax, Virginia

Major: Economics

Year of graduation: May 2014

What are some of your favorite hobbies? Guitar, writing/producing music, and poker

What is the most interesting experience you’ve ever had? Spending two weeks traveling across Turkey and experiencing its incredibly diverse culture.

What is one thing about you that most people wouldn’t know? For a long time I seriously considered studying guitar in college and pursuing music as a career.

What do you wish someone had told you during freshman year? Do what interests you most and realize that your interests can, and probably will, change. Make sure to choose your classes so that you get broad exposure to a variety of subjects early on. 

Paul Fitzsimmons

Hometown: Alexandria, VA

Major: Accounting

Year of graduation: 2014

What are some of your favorite hobbies? I love playing sports in my free time and going out with friends on the weekends. I enjoy playing soccer and golf most. 

What is the most interesting experience you’ve ever had? I went skydiving last summer, which was indescribable. Definitely interesting, among many other things!

 What is one thing about you that most people wouldn’t know? Growing up the one thing I knew for certain that I didn’t want to be when I grew up was an accountant. Funny how things change…

What do you wish someone had told you during freshman year? That I was going to major in business so that I wouldn’t have been behind my sophomore year and have to take eight COB pre-requisites in two semesters.

Karl Grabbi

Hometown: Alexandria, VA

Major: Finance

Year of graduation: 2015

What are some of your favorite hobbies?  Traveling the world, playing golf, basketball, lacrosse, and skiing.

What is the most interesting experience you’ve ever had?  Exploring underground rivers and caves in Belize in which I discovered a 5,000 year old Mayan artifact.  It was an experience unlike any other in the world. I’ve also traveled to Cinque Terre, Italy where I saw some of the most beautiful coastlines and mountains in Europe.   

What is one thing about you that most people wouldn’t know?  I am fluent in Estonian and didn’t actually learn English till elementary school. 

What do you wish someone had told you during freshman year?  Get involved with as many organizations as you can on campus.  Join a club sports team, rush a fraternity, and check out some academic clubs because it’s the relationships that you build with your peers that will last for the rest of your life.  Also, take advantage of any opportunity to study abroad because there is so much to see out in the world.  

Beatrix Haddon

Hometown: Arlington, VA

Major: Marketing

Year of graduation: 2015

What are some of your favorite hobbies? I love photography, playing piano and guitar, and going on adventures.

What is the most interesting experience you’ve ever had? I studied abroad in London the summer after freshman year. It was really interesting to explore the city and compare our culture with theirs. The best part was seeing people’s reactions when I tried to speak in a British accent.

What is one thing about you that most people wouldn’t know? I talk and walk in my sleep!

What do you wish someone had told you during freshman year? Tests in college make more of an impact on your grade than they did in high school. One test can really make or break your grade.

Ameer Hasan

Hometown: Fredericksburg Virginia

Major: Accounting

Year of graduation: 2015

What are some of your favorite hobbies? A few of my favorite hobbies are exercising, playing sports, reading, watching movies, and hanging out with friends and family!

What is the most interesting experience you’ve ever had?

I was fortunate enough to visit Jerusalem in the summer of 2012 and got to site see various historical sites!

What is one thing about you that most people wouldn’t know? I’m a big health freak. I started eating healthy two years ago and haven’t stopped the healthy living I’ve taken on!

What do you wish someone had told you during freshman year? Get involved on campus early on because you’ll form great relationships along the way. There are so many organizations and clubs JMU has to offer, your bound to find one that you’ll love. 

     

Brendan Long

What are some of your favorite hobbies? Golf, reading, basketball and travelling.

What is the most interesting experience you’ve ever had? Studying abroad in Belgium for three months was very unique. It was an amazing experience, which gave me a broader perception of the world.

What is one thing about you that most people wouldn’t know? I have a love of fine leather dress shoes.

What do you wish someone had told you during freshman year? Join more organizations, and respect the art of the practitioner. 

        

Quincy Nguyen

Quincy NguyenHometown: Fairfax, VA

Major: Accounting

Year of graduation: 2014

What are some of your favorite hobbies? Scouting and outdoor activities 

What is the most interesting experience you’ve ever had? Hiking and climbing up Half Dome in Yosemite.

What is one thing about you that most people wouldn’t know? I worship F. Scott Fitzgerald and in many ways try to emulate his ornate style in my writing.

What do you wish someone had told you during freshman year? I wish someone told me to live it up because time flies by so fast in college, you turn around and next thing you know you’re already a decrepit and cynical junior.

Douglas Peppel

Hometown: Nazareth, Pennsylvania

Major: Finance

Year of graduation: 2014

What are some of your favorite hobbies? Exercising, golf, baseball, basketball & investing

 What is the most interesting experience you’ve ever had? Studying abroad in general.  More specifically, meeting a couple who had their honeymoon near my hometown while walking around Istanbul, Turkey.  

What is one thing about you that most people wouldn’t know? I am fortunate enough to have better than 20/20 vision.  

What do you wish someone had told you during freshman year? The greatest way to achieve personal growth is by getting involved outside of the classroom and stepping out of your comfort zone.  

Jennifer Pierz

Major: Accounting

What are some of your favorite hobbies?

Playing basketball, reading, writing, and hanging out with friends

What is the most interesting experience you’ve ever had?

Swimming with dolphins in the Bahamas

What is one thing about you that most people wouldn’t know?

I am currently an original member and the treasurer of the JMU Dodgeball team. We travel to places such as Chicago and Michigan and have placed in the top 5 schools in the nation since we were founded.

What do you wish someone had told you during freshman year?

Find where your passion lies and don’t try to do everything. Being extremely involved in one organization looks better on a resume than having five organizations that you are uninterested in. 

Matthew Rubino

Matthew RubinoHometown: Kimberton, PA

Major: Finance (with a concentration in European Business) and a minor in Economics

Year of graduation: 2015

What are some of your favorite hobbies? I am very passionate about golf and allocate my time during the summer between work, golf tournaments, and going to our family’s beach house in Ocean City, NJ.  Other hobbies I enjoy include reading, body surfing, and spending time with family and friends.

What is the most interesting experience you’ve ever had? The most interesting experience I have had thus far was watching the sunrise from above the clouds at the top of Mt. Haleakala on Maui.

What is one thing about you that most people wouldn’t know? One of my goals is to play the top 100 golf courses in the country.

What do you wish someone had told you during freshman year? Have an open mind about trying new things.  College is the place to expand your horizons and really enjoy your time before you set out in the real world.  Create college experiences that force you to move out of your comfort zone.  

     

 

Rachel Sturm

Hometown: McLean, VA

Major: CIS and Marketing

Year of graduation: 2014

What are some of your favorite hobbies? I’m a huge concert lover, and try to go to as many shows as possible. I also love to travel, and am happiest whenever I’m on a beach!

What is the most interesting experience you’ve ever had? Definitely would be studying abroad in Antwerp, Belgium last year. I went to eleven different countries in three months, and loved every minute of it. Some of my favorite cities were Santorini, Prague, and Barcelona – but I mostly just loved having the opportunity to explore other countries and experience other cultures!

What is one thing about you that most people wouldn’t know? I was born in New York City! I lived in Manhattan for seven months before I moved to Virginia. I still wish I had been able to grow up there, and I go back to visit as often as possible.

What do you wish someone had told you during freshman year? Get involved! It doesn’t have to be an organization that you’ll stick with for all four years, but find something and put yourself out there – it’s the best way to meet people and get acclimated to the school. Also, do your best to try to get ahead in your COB classes, it will hurt you in the long run if you don’t!

Scott Salopek

Scott SalopekHometown: Clarksville, MD

Major: Finance (Economics and Political Science minors)

Year of graduation: 2014

What are some of your favorite hobbies? I enjoy playing sports, particularly football and basketball. Music is another big passion of mine; I love listening to almost any type of music.

What is the most interesting experience you’ve ever had? Studying abroad in London for May-mester after my freshman year was one of the best experiences of my life. I enjoyed the different culture, and the experience has motivated me to see more of the world.

What is one thing about you that most people wouldn’t know? I occasionally write and record covers to famous songs.

What do you wish someone had told you during freshman year? Take advantage of every second and appreciate every moment, because it goes by very quickly.

Jason Welsford

Jason WelsfordHometown: Chester Springs, PA

Major: Business Management 

Year of graduation: 2014

What are some of your favorite hobbies? Trap shooting, cooking, eating, surfing, boating and traveling. 

What is the most interesting experience you’ve ever had? One time I was in Tanzania, Africa, and there was a hyena and lioness fighting outside our tent. 

What is one thing about you that most people wouldn’t know? I ran the warehouse at our family business when I was a sophomore in high school.  I took over for a full-time employee who, due to health reasons, abruptly stopped work.

What do you wish someone had told you during freshman year? Go to office hours!

Cameron Young

Cameron YoungHometown: Chantilly, VA

Major: International Business

Year of graduation: 2015

What are some of your favorite hobbies? Cooking, running, eating and traveling. 

What is the most interesting experience you've ever had? My entire ASB trip to Costa Rica but if I had to choose one, learning to surf. When you finally are able to stand up on the board that is an indescribable feeling that everyone should experience.

What is one thing about you that most people wouldn't know? I ran in to the corner of a wall and cracked my head open as a child. If you look closely at my forehead there's a Harry Potter-esque scar on it.

What do you wish someone had told you during freshman year? Join a random club, take a random class, participate in a random program; you never know where it may lead you.
