Google Online Marketing Challenge Finalists


A JMU marketing team earned top honors in the inaugural Google Online Marketing Challenge [http://www.google.com/onlinechallenge].  Following a rigorous judging process, five JMU marketing students were awarded the "finalist" designation, putting them in the top ten in the world out of over 8,000 students on 1,670 teams.  The Challenge is an undergraduate/graduate student marketing competition that uses Google AdWords, Google's flagship advertising product.  At JMU, the Challenge was part of the spring 2008 Strategic Internet Marketing course taught by Dr. Theresa Flaherty, Professor of Marketing.   Dr. Flaherty's four other teams placed in the top 10 percent worldwide. Three JMU teams were designated as "Regional Semi-Finalists" for ranking in the Top 50 in the North, Central, and South American region.

The JMU finalist team and Dr. Flaherty received an all-expense paid trip to Google headquarters in Mountain View, CA.  The students, pictured above from left to right, included Katelynn McGinnis, Bethany Kent, Ryan Farrell, and Renee Montmeny (Absent is team member Julia Marchetti).

The visit included breakfast and lunch with "Googlers" and a tour of the famous Googleplex campus.  Also included was an interactive program of lively guest speakers from Google addressing topics such as the history of Google, how sales and marketing function, and career opportunities.

The highlight of the Google visit was recognition during the awards ceremony.  The picture above shows the JMU student team and Dr. Flaherty after receiving certificates signed by Google's VP of Marketing.
