The JC Penney Spirit Award - Laura Barkley is a senior graduating Magna Cum Laude. She is
a Business-to-Business Marketing major, with an additional concentration in European Business, and a minor in Communication Studies. Laura’s experience working as a Sales Associate at Nordstrom allowed her to learn about the retail industry firsthand. During her employment at the Fortune 500 Company, Laura was trained to provide service for a diverse customer base, engage in cross-selling techniques, and utilize the company database to develop personal trade. As a result of her sincere dedication to customer service, Nordstrom received multiple letters of appreciation acknowledging the exceptional assistance customers received from Laura. In addition to her employment opportunities, Laura is involved in various organizations on campus, including the national marketing, sales, and management fraternity, Pi Sigma Epsilon, and the service organization, Circle K International. Last spring, Laura was inducted into James Madison’s Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma, the premier business honor society. In 2008, she was the only sophomore to be inducted into Mu Kappa Tau, the national marketing honor society. In the midst of academic and service involvement, Laura has continued engaging in her passion for music, performing as a member of The BluesTones, one of JMU’s prestigious a cappella groups. Still contemplating potential careers, Laura is currently researching the corporate buying positions, thinking she may set her sights on a future buying position at Nordstrom.

The 2008 Outstanding Student in Marketing - Mark Bushey is a marketing major with concentrations in Business to Business Marketing and European Business. Mark has participated in numerous organizations at JMU including Mu Kappa Tau, Beta Gamma Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, and the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Mark has also been very active in JMU's Alternative Break Program. As a student site leader in 2008, Mark led 56 students and faculty to New Orleans to participate in the ongoing effort to rebuild following Hurricane Katrina. Last summer, Mark was an intern at Carlisle Creative Services in Carlisle, PA, where he served as an account coordinator and copywriter. After graduation, Mark is joining Teach for America, where he will be a secondary math teacher in the Philadelphia region.
The 2008 Marketing Faculty Award for Excellence - Heath Cline has helped manage his father's convenience store throughout college and credits this business experience as his greatest learning tool. Last summer, Heath continued assisting with the family business and spent time away from work participating in the 2008 American Heart Association Tennis Tournament. While at JMU, he has earned a concentration in European Business while studying abroad in Antwerp, Belgium during his Junior Year. He was inducted into Beta Gamma Sigma International Honor Society and most recently into Mu Kappa Tau Marketing Honor Society. Heath plans on working as a Contract Specialist for the Department of Navy upon graduation and hopes to soon pursue his MBA.
The 2008 Derek Sprague Marketing Award - Derek Sprague is a JMU Marketing alumni who began funding this award immediately after graduating from JMU and has continued to do so for over fifteen years. The student(s) selected for this award must show strong academic performance and also demonstrate a willingness to take initiative and bring a sense of entrepreneurship to their collegiate learning experience. There aretwo recipients of this award for 2009: Charlotte Pirro and Kathryn Dellli-Colli.
Charlotte Pirro is receiving a BBA degree in Marketing from JMU, graduating Magna Cum Laude. She has a driven work ethic and a passion for marketing, resulting in her 3.95 Major GPA. Charlotte has contributed as an active member in multiple organizations, including the PWC xTax Challenge, CHOICES open house, and the CoB Quality Council. She is also a member of Beta Gamma Sigma international business honor society, Mu Kappa Tau national marketing honor society, and Sigma Alpha Lambda service honor society. Charlotte completed two professional internships, at Time Warner Cable and comScore Inc., where she had the opportunity to develop her marketing skills in the business arena. She is looking forward to making an immediate impact in today's marketplace.
Kathryn Delli-Colli has spent her four years at JMU as an active member of Phi Chi Theta Business Fraternity as well as Student Ambassadors. Between her business classes, working as a student assistant, and serving as a Marketing Department Representative, Zane Showker Hall has truly become her home away from home. Her team won second place and Best Teamwork in the 2008 Business Plan Competition, with Kathryn receiving MVP for her team. In April, she completed her senior honors thesis on gender differences in response to win-back offers. This August, Kathryn will be starting as a Junior Associate of Project Management with Sapient Consulting in Arlington, VA.
2008 JC Penney Spirit Award - Emalee Kohos is a senior graduating Cum Laude Honors. She is a double major in Marketing with a concentration in European Business and a Communication Studies major with a concentration in Cultural Studies. Emalee's experiences with the Target Executive Internship allowed her to gain firsthand experience with the retail industry. In the 8 week internship program with Target she was trained to manage a store team of over 40 employees, worked in human resources where she interviewed potential candidates for employment, learned about merchandising, guest services, and over saw inventory management to maximize sales. As a final project she planned, organized, and executed an in-store fashion show where she coordinated over 30 outfits from the back-to-school clothes lines for the employees' children to model during the show. As a result sales increased in both the girls and boys clothing departments and Emalee was ecstatic about the great turnout and the end results. Emalee is also involved in numerous organizations on campus and has thorougly enjoyed her classes and time at JMU. She looks forward to beginning her career and feels prepared to enter into the job market.

Congratulations to Diana Doody, a senior JMU marketing major, who has been awarded the 2008 Shirley & Stanley Hayman Scholarship given annually from the Retail Solutions Providers Association.
Five student teams from the Department of Marketing placed in the top 10 percent globally in the 2008 Google Online Marketing Challenge. One of the JMU teams ranked in the top 10 out of 1,670 teams, and was designated as a finalist for the Americas region which includes undergraduate and graduate students from North, Central, and South American universities. Their prize was an all-expense-paid trip to the Googleplex this fall. The challenge was a course project in Dr. Theresa Flaherty's Strategic Internet Marketing (MKTG 470) class. 2008 Marketing Student Awards
Congratulations to Sarah Peterson, Courtney Gearhart, Laura Karr, and Michael Snader for winning scholarly awards from the Marketing Department at the spring 2008 recent College of Business Awards Ceremony.

The Outstanding Student in Marketing Award is based on "Best All Around" - outstanding academic performance, leadership while at JMU, and contributions in and outside of the classroom. The 2008 recipient is Sarah Peterson (peterssm@jmu.edu), a double major in Marketing and Psychology. Sarah has participated in numerous organizations while attending JMU. Along with serving as the College of Business Department Representative for the Marketing Class of 2008, she is also a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, Phi Kappa Phi, the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and Circle K International. During her junior and senior years, Sarah completed her Marketing Senior Honors Thesis. Sarah is the recipient of the 2007/2008 Edythe Rowley Scholarship and the 2004/2005 JMU Faculty/Staff Scholarship. Last summer she interned with The Homestead in the Convention Services department in Hot Springs, Virginia, where she assisted with event planning and market research. Sarah's long term career goals include earning an MBA and working in sports and entertainment marketing or advertising. Sarah is seated with her parents, Scott and Shari Peterson.

Courtney Gearhart(gearhacf@jmu.edu) is the 2008 recipient of the Marketing Faculty Award for Excellence. Selection criteria include outstanding academic performance, contributions in and outside of the classroom, with emphasis on service to the community. Courtney earned a concentration in European Business when she completed the COB 300 semester abroad program in Antwerp, Belgium in the Fall of 2006. In her time at JMU, she has been involved with SafeRides and Madison Marketing Association, and held positions with her campus ministry group, Canterbury. Courtney has also been a Relay for Life team captain since her sophomore year, and is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma honor society. Last summer, she interned in the marketing department of the Verizon Wireless Virginia Beach Amphitheater. After graduating, Courtney hopes to move farther south and start a career in the field of Business-to-Business sales. Courtney is seated with her friends - Glynis McCabe and Chris Rennix.

Laura Karr(karrla@jmu.edu) is the 2008 recipient of the Derek Sprague Marketing Award. Derek Sprague is a JMU Marketing alumni who began funding this award immediately after graduating from JMU and has continued to do so for over fifteen years. The student selected for this award must show strong academic performance and also demonstrate a willingness to take initiative and bring a sense of entrepreneurship to their collegiate learning experience. Laura has participated in numerous organizations while attending JMU. Along with serving as Sales and Promotions chair of Zeta Tau Alpha and Secretary of Order of Omega, she is also a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society and Beta Sigma Gamma International Honor Society. During her junior and senior year, Laura worked to complete her Senior Honors Thesis which admitted her into the JMU Honors Program. Last summer Laura completed an internship at Internet Strategy Group in Baltimore, Maryland. Laura was offered the opportunity to continue her internship from school and worked part time for the company during her senior year. After graduation, she will be working full time at Internet Strategy Group as a Media Planner. Laura is joined by her parents (Ann and David Karr).

Every year the National Retail Federation selects an outstanding retailer from industry and the recipient of this industry award then names and endows a $1,500 scholarship for the university of his/her choice. When the CEO of JCPenney received the retail award, he selected James Madison University to receive the JCPenney Spirit Award. Students selected for this award must have strong academic credentials and must have demonstrated an interest in retailing as a career through coursework and extra-curricular internships. Michael Snader (snaderma@jmu.edu) is the recipient of the 2008 JCPenney Spirit Award. Michael has completed coursework and projects relevant to retailing while at JMU. He is a member in the Madison Marketing Association and Beta Gamma Sigma International Business Honor Society. He is also involved with Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, he served the community as a youth sponsor at Zion Mennonite Church, and is a part time ski instructor at Massanutten resort. Michael completed an operations management internship with Vulcan Materials Company. Upon graduation he will be working with AXA Advisors as a financial planner in the Harrisonburg area. Attending the awards dinner are Linda Snader (mother), Kristina Snader (sister), and Melissa Jones (girlfriend).

MMA Distringuished Chapter Award - 2007-08
Congratulations to the members of the Madison Marketing Association (MMA) for being named a "Distinguished Collegiate Chapter" for 2007-08 by the American Marketing Association. JMU was selected as one of four finalists from over 400 chapters nationwide. Congratulations to Mr. Bob McMillen, faculty advisor, and all the MMA members!
