About Us


Mission

The mission of the Department of Management is to provide nationally competitive undergraduate and graduate education in the study of management. Management is work done through others. The management program prepares its majors for entry-level jobs, and for eventual positions in middle-level and upper-level management, as well as for high-quality graduate programs. In addition, the program provides general management education to all students in the College of Business and to students in a wide variety of programs across the university.

Objectives

  • Functions of Management:  Management majors should understand the leadership and interpersonal skills essential to getting work done through others so that they can attain organizational objectives in culturally diverse and global business environments.
  • Legal and Ethical Environment of Management:  Management majors should comprehend the ethical and legal limits on a manager’s behavior in accomplishing management functions.
  • Decision Making and Problem Solving:  Management majors should develop critical thinking skills demonstrated by their ability to integrate information from diverse sources, use logic and reasoning to develop solutions, and discern the most appropriate course of action in decisions and problems.
  • Organizational Strategy and Design:  Management majors should explain the external and internal variables that influence the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of organizational strategy and organization design.

Faculty

Our faculty consists of just under 30 academics who hold terminal or advanced degrees in the field of Management. Faculty interests include organizational behavior, ethics, leadership, human resource management, teams work, group dynamics, and motivation.

Students

We have one of the largest majors in the College of Business at James Madison University. Many are business majors while others have also selected to specialize in Human Resource Management or Technology, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship (TIE).

Location

We are located in Showker Hall, which is close to the Port Republic Road entrance to the University. Our offices are located on the 5th Floor. Faculty can be primarily found on the 5th and 6th floors.
