In 1996, Cornell graduate and hospitality enthusiast Laura Kornegay started her career with Bristol Hotels' catering business. After only a year and a half, she was promoted to General Manager and began making her way in the recruiting field in 1998. After a few years of developing essential skills and discovering her niche, Laura needed to find something new as Bristol was sold in 2000. In the fall of 2000, she joined Carlson Restaurants, a.k.a. T.G.I. Friday's, where she was a team player until 2004. At this time, Club Corp, an organization where some of her former Bristol coworkers were employed, made her a job offer in Texas. She gladly accepted the position of Director of Recruiting, and continues to succeed in her department.

Ms. Kornegay believes that patience, listening, communication, as well as knowledge and understanding of the industry are all key elements in being successful in the business world. She also knows how important time-management is as she has multiple to-do lists for the many ongoing tasks involved in her "no typical day" work environment. When outside of the office, she visits colleges, career fairs, board meetings, and luncheons. While in the office, she typically attends training classes, OPS meetings, and meetings with club managers, along with reviewing resumes, working on the budget, and accomplishing at least two to three things from her to-do lists.

Laura's words of wisdom to potential HTM grads: "Hard work is all worth it in the end." She also encourages students to realize that while they are in school, there are always new classes at the end of a semester, but in career positions, one could be in one position for months or even years continually learning before advancement.

She says that there are at least two to three JMU grad students employed at her firm, and stated that they have greatly contributed to the organization with their superb management skills and business "sense" obtained through JMU's curriculum and clubs.
