Allyn Gutauskus first broke into the hospitality field with ARAMARK in 1986 where she was the Regional Human Resources Director of Campus Services.  She discovered Farmington Country Club when she and her husband relocated.  She was hired to initiate a Human Resources Department.  Currently she is the Human Resources Manager for Farmington Country Club in Charlottesville, Virginia.

According to Gutauskus, technical knowledge of Human Resources and legal and ethical issues are keys to success in the hospitality industry.  Daily tasks often need to be placed on hold when issues arise such as accidents, immediate needs, or performance issues.  In the hospitality industry, one needs to be present on weekends and evenings as well as days.  Gutauskus says, "This is not a nine-to-five.  Days are geared to the rhythm of the business."

Gutauskus has one key recommendation regarding entrance into the hospitality field: work experience.  While in school, she suggests internships to gain patience with long hours and to see how labor-intensive a position might be.  Students become more marketable if they have had an internship.  Many people can display their degree, but the work experience is more important in the eyes of companies who are hiring.

Currently, Farmington Country Club does not have any JMU graduates working within their organization.  When they are on hand, graduates bring in fresh insight, current trends, and technical knowledge.  They tend to have the most recent information and can assist in how to apply that information to the job at hand.
