What does it mean to get connected?


When Kenneth Bartee, ’83, reflects on his experiences as a student at JMU, he remembers with fondness the innovative and sometimes “quirky” teaching methods of management professor, Dr. Kent Zimmerman, now retired. An enthusiastic Duke supporter, Bartee wants to see future students have the same positive experience he had at JMU. That’s the kind of legacy Bartee hopes to keep alive in JMU’s College of Business. With their recent gift of $250,000 to establish the Kenneth R. Bartee Endowed Professorship in the CoB, Bartee and his wife, Sue, hope to reward faculty who go the “extra mile” for their students. The endowment may be awarded to deserving faculty in any CoB department.

In business, it means everything. As a business professional, you know that.

On campus, it means everything too. Just look around. Blackberries, iPhones, IMming, FaceBook. Students are constantly connecting to one another, their families, the marketplace, the world.

To today’s business students, especially, it means everything when alumni, friends and the business community are connected back to the JMU business programs that, in turn, support business, the marketplace and economies.

At JMU, alumni who get connected mean the difference between a good education and a great education. They are the difference between theory and application. They are the difference between state-supported education and the margin of excellence that private support provides. They are the difference between a textbook-perfect education and the insights, experiences, networking and mentoring that come from a personal relationship.

Getting connected starts with each of us individually and our unbelievable capacity to Be The Change in a changing world.
