Admission to the CIS major is competitive. All students in the CIS Program must be admitted to the College of Business.
To be admitted in the CIS Major, you must first be admitted to James Madison University. Admission to the university is competitive. We receive applications from students representing over 2,000 different high schools. Because high school programs and grading systems vary widely, the secondary program cannot be rigidly prescribed. However, in general, we expect candidates for admission will have completed college preparatory courses in English, mathematics, natural science, social science and foreign language. For more information on how to apply to the University, please visit the JMU Admissions Page.
Students majoring in CIS must apply for admission to the College of Business. If you are admitted to JMU and indicate a preference for a major in the College of Business, you will not automatically be admitted to the College of Business. You must formally apply for admission to the college before majoring in a CoB program.
Students are formally admitted into the College of Business as a B.B.A. major and permitted to register for COB 300 when the following requirements are met:
A completed application for admission into the College of Business is submitted to the COB ASC according to the following schedule:
The B.B.A. core GPA is calculated using grades earned in the B.B.A. lower-level core excluding calculus (MATH 205 or MATH 235). Only grades earned at JMU will be used. The university policy for calculating repeat-credit and repeat-forgiveness will be followed.
Students with a 2.7 B.B.A. core GPA are assured admission into the College of Business. Students who meet all of the requirements above but fail to achieve a 2.7 B.B.A. core GPA will be admitted to the College of Business based on B.B.A. core GPA ranking, and pending resources and space availability.
