Chandler CIS Lab Policies and Procedures

 The CIS Lab located in Chandler 133 is provided to CIS faculty and majors as an instructional and learning asset. This document specifies CIS &MS department guidelines and procedures for the lab’s operations.  The lab’s purpose is twofold:

 The lab provides faculty with instructional facilities that can be scheduled to supplement regular classroom instruction.

  • The lab provides CIS department approved CIS majors with a lab facility to complete CIS course assignments.

 The CIS lab is configured with 26 student workstations and an instructor’s workstation.  The instructor’s workstation is connected to two large screen monitors.  All of the computers have the standard JMU lab software installed and have JMU network access via login with an individual’s JMU UserID and Password.  The lab also contains a locked server closet equipped with the lab switch and a Dell server. Card access to the lab is limited to authorized JMU JAC holders which includes CIS faculty and department approved CIS majors.  Students who are enrolled in upper-level (300-level or 400-level) CIS courses may use the lab, but must be admitted by a faculty member or CIS major.

 General  Lab Usage Policy

 All persons who use the lab must abide by JMU Policy #1207, Appropriate Use of Information Technology Resources.  The department is requiring the additional rules:

 

  1. The lab hours are limited from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily during the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters when the University is open and classes are in session.
  2. CIS faculty may schedule times to hold classes and labs.  The lab is not to replace the regularly scheduled classroom.  It is provided as a supplemental instructional space.
  3. CIS faculty has priority in scheduling lab time.  The lab will be available to approved CIS majors and other students who are enrolled in upper-level CIS courses during lab hours when the lab has not been scheduled by faculty.  Students will use the lab for course-related work only.
  4. All users must assure that doors remain closed except for entry and exit.
  5. All users must assure that no unauthorized persons are in the lab.
  6. All users must not bring food or drink into the lab.
  7. All users are responsible for insuring that the lab remains clean and uncluttered. 

Access Policy for CIS Majors

 The CIS Lab will be accessible for CIS course related work to CIS majors with department approval.  Approval is to be requested through a department appointed administrator.  Students will use the lab for course-related work only. Department policy regarding CIS major lab requests and usage include:

 The CIS major (student) will complete a request form.  The form must be signed by the student.

  1. Upon approval, the student will have JAC access to the CIS lab until the end of the current academic  year unless:
    1. The student graduates in December.
    2. The student leaves the university.
    3. The student’s lab privileges are revoked.
    4. Students may use the lab between the posted hours if no classes are being conducted in the lab.
    5. Students will comply with JMU Policy #1207, Appropriate Use of Information Technology Resources, and the department policies enumerated in this document.
    6. All student activity in the lab is subject to the JMU Honor Code.

 Access Policy for Non-CIS Major Students Enrolled in Upper-Level (300 or 400-Level) CIS Courses

 Students who are enrolled in upper-level (300 or 400-level) courses may be admitted to the lab by faculty members and CIS Majors with JAC Card access privileges. Students will use the lab for course-related work only.

Students will be facilitated access by a faculty member or CIS Major with JAC Card access privileges.

  1. Students may use the lab between the posted hours if no classes are being conducted in the lab.
  2. Students will comply with JMU Policy #1207, Appropriate Use of Information Technology Resources, and the department policies enumerated in this document.
  3. All student activity in the lab is subject to the JMU Honor Code.

 Access Policy for Department Faculty and Instructors

 The CIS Lab is available to CIS department faculty and instructors to schedule teaching or lab sessions.  The lab is not to be used to replace regularly scheduled class rooms.  Department policy regarding CIS faculty lab requests and usage include:

  1. Faculty JAC access is requested through the  department appointed administrator.  Once approved, the access will continue indefinitely unless:
    1. The instructor requests deactivation of lab access.
    2. The instructor is no longer employed by JMU.
    3. The instructor’s lab privileges are suspended or revoked by the department.
  2. Instructor JAC access is requested on a semester by semester basis by the department appointed administrator.   Access is granted on a semester by semester basis and must be renewed each semester.
  3. CIS Lab time may be scheduled by contacting the lab administrator.  Official requests need to be made at least one week prior to the requested time/date slot.
  4. Instructors will comply with JMU Policy #1207, Appropriate Use of Information Technology Resources, and the department policies enumerated in this document.
