General Information
James Madison University is a public, state-supported
institution of higher education located in the city of
Harrisonburg, Virginia in the heart of the Shenandoah Valley.
In 1985 JMU was the first public college or
university in Virginia to establish an independent School of
Accounting in the College of Business. The School is fully accredited by the
Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) for
both undergraduate and graduate programs.
The mission of the School of
Accounting at James Madison University is to cultivate an environment of
educational excellence.
Strengths of the School of Accounting Program
- Curriculum is designed to emphasize technical
competence, experiences in effective writing, group and team
processes, and effective oral and presentation communication.
- Faculty members are recognized with national and
international awards; serve in national positions in various
professional and academic organizations and are active in research
(evidenced by acceptance of their articles in nationally-recognized
publications). However, their first priority is teaching and working with
students.
- Computers are primary tools in today's business
world and in the accounting program.
Our computer labs and classrooms are continually upgraded with the
latest in hardware and software. This
technology is used in the classroom as a teaching tool and as a
learning technique. It is strongly
recommended that students in the accounting program have their own
personal computer.
- Every effort is made to maintain small size
classes. An effective learning
environment is created through personal interaction between
instructors and students.
- Graduates from our program are recruited by the Big
Four, major regional and local accounting firms, industry and state
and federal government.
The JMU School of Accounting is the home of the
Center for Research in Accounting Education and continues to
sponsor research and publish books addressing many of the pressing
issues facing accounting educators today. The center founded the nationally recognized
Journal of Accounting Education.
