Mission Statement:
Landmines not only kill and maim innocent people but continue to sap the economic strength of a country and threaten its political stability, even when the war that caused them is but a distant memory. The goals of the Humanitarian Landmine Disposal Foundation (HLDF), therefore, are threefold: - To determine the extent of mine infestation in countries to prevent further casualties; - To return the land and infrastructure to productive and habitable use in the shortest possible time; and, - To give assistance to those who are victims of this scourge. There are 80 to 119 million residual landmines across the world that continue to pose a deadly hazard to the civilian population - that's, one land mine for every 16 children in the world. Fortunately, technological progress now means that the HLDF is unique in having an advanced sensor system able to locate and render inoperative mines at 1/3 the cost of existing methods, as well as significantly reducing the time required. The aim of a mine action programme is not a simply technical engineering objective - to survey, mark and eradicate landmines - but a humanitarian and developmental one: to create an environment in which people can live more safely and in which economic and social development can occur free from the constraints imposed by landmine contamination. Eradication and the other technical core elements are central to this process, but they are merely tools to achieve a broader objective, not the objective itself. The HLDF, in cooperation with governments from affected countries and the world community, is ready to play its part to make the ecological and humanitarian disaster of landmines a thing of the past.
