Geneva International Center for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD)

Organization Information

Organization Name:
Geneva International Center for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD)

Organization Type:
IO

Mission Statement:
The Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD) works towards a world free of anti-personnel land mines and for the reduction of the humanitarian impact of other remnants of war by providing operational assistance, creating and sharing knowledge, and supporting instruments of international law. Operational Assistance and Services: The GICHD develops tools needed by people affected by landmines. Many are produced and distributed in cooperation with the United Nations and other institutions. These include: á Sending highly specialised experts to emerging or on-going demining programmes ; á Providing the Information Management System for Mine Action (IMSMA) allowing for better planning, management and accounting for demining ; á Elaborating International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) under a mandate from the United Nations to improve quality; á Providing specialised training in different areas of humanitarian mine action ; á Evaluating the functioning, safety and cost-effectiveness of demining programmes and providing support for improvement. Research & Development: The GICHD has established a research capacity with the objective of making humanitarian demining safer and more effective. The starting point for these researches are unsolved problems or needs for improvement identified in the field. The primary aim of the GICHD research work is not to publish information, but to provide practical tools such as, training, software-applications, standards, and handbooks. Research projects cover areas such as socio-economic aspects of mine-action, needs of mine victims, use of mine-detecting dogs, mechanical equipment, and communication for mine awareness. Supporting the Ottawa Convention In 2001, States Parties to the Ottawa Convention mandated the GICHD to establish an Implementation Support Unit to take care of the issues related to the Convention. The Unit's duties include support and advice to the Presidency of Meetings of the States Parties and to Standing Committee Co-Chairs, communications about the Convention and its implementation, and developing and maintaining a Documentation Centre.
