Mission Statement:
The Center for International Rehabilitation is a not-for-profit organization that develops technologies and programs to help people with disabilities worldwide reach their full potential. Founded in 1996 by Dr. William Kennedy Smith, and based in Chicago, the CIR operates in collaboration with Northwestern University, the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, and the Department of Veterans Affairs Chicago Healthcare System. The CIR conducts fieldwork, research, training, and education around the globe. Work at the CIR has never been timelier. CIR engineering research and educational programs will play a critical role in rebuilding Afghanistan and other areas of the world affected by war and conflict. Research by the CIR has the potential to find solutions to daily problems encountered by people with disabilities in some of the poorest countries in the world.
