Combined Clinical, School and Counseling
The JMU Combined Doctoral Program in Clinical, School and Counseling Psychology is built on two complementary goals that reflect our commitment to the practitioner-scientist model of training. Goal I encompasses major Psychological Foundations as recommended by the American Psychological Association. Each student must demonstrate competence in these foundations, either through previous graduate training or course work completed in the JMU Combined Doctoral Program. Goal II embodies those areas of advanced study found in the Core Doctoral Curriculum. Goal II ensures that graduates will have achieved a sufficient depth of knowledge and experience in applied skills and abilities allowing them to provide leadership as professional psychologists in meeting the mental health needs of children and families in a diverse society.
Upon completion of the program, each student is expected to demonstrate achievement of Goals I and II through the successful completion of the specific competencies and objectives listed under each goal. The goals of the Core Doctoral Curriculum of the JMU Combined Doctoral Program in Clinical, School, and Counseling Psychology are adapted from the standards suggested for professional schools set forth by the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology (NCSPP; 1995). An overview of the JMU Combined Doctoral Program goals and competencies follows.
