Distinguished Teacher Award Guidelines - Fall 2008

James Madison University prides itself on the accomplishments and commitment of its faculty.  Each year, in recognition of superlative achievement in teaching, the College of Integrated Science and Technology identifies one faculty member within the college as the recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award. 

Minimal Criteria

  • Currently has full-time (non-retired or non-emeritus) status
  • Has completed at least five years of service at JMU at the rank of assistant professor or above
  • Has not received a Distinguished Teacher Award in the past 10 years
  • Has consistently received satisfactory ratings in scholarly activity and service

Additional Criteria

  • Candidate has consistently demonstrated outstanding teaching
  • Candidate is seen as a model for faculty and students

Data Sources

  • Current Vita
  • Nomination letter from academic unit (academic unit heard and/or members) highlighting the candidate’s teaching
  • Brief statement of nomination if different from academic unit
  • No more than two additional letters of nomination
  • DVD of current teaching (one copy—deadline for this data source only is November 14)
  • Interview with the Faculty Development Committee

Nominations

Each academic unit (academic unit head and/or members) may nominate one or more faculty members for the award.  There are no special forms.  Submit an electronic copy of the documents for nomination to the chair of the Faculty Development Committee, c/o the Dean’s Office, by Monday, October 6, 2008.   Address the e-mail submission to Jessica Shifflett (shiffljn@CISAT.JMU.EDU).  Nominations from the academic unit PAC are strongly encouraged.

Award

The recipient of the College’s Distinguished Teacher Award will receive a $ 1,000 honorarium and will be recognized at a University and College meeting in the spring.
