Department Student Awards 2011-2012

PAST AWARDEES
The Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry recognizes outstanding majors through our annual awards ceremony and the College of Science and Mathematics Awards Program in April. Outstanding students are nominated by faculty for the following awards.
R. D. Cool Award The R. D. Cool Award is given to an outstanding junior chemistry student.   The award is named for Professor R. D. Cool, a faculty member who retired from the Department in 1972.

Karen Corbett ('13)

J. W. Chappell Scholarship The J. W. Chappell Scholarship is given to an outstanding junior who intends to pursue a career in the health professions or teaching. The award consists of in-state tuition credit for the fall semester of the senior year.   This award was established in memory of Professor J. W. Chappell, a former Head of the Department. Prof. Chappell retired in 1976; his family established this award in his memory during the 1980s

J. W. Chappell Award The J. W. Chappell Award was established when Prof. Chappell retired in 1976 and recognizes an outstanding senior who is pursuing a career in medicine, the health professions, or teaching.

Charles Smith ('12)

F. A. Palocsay Award in Undergraduate Research The F. A. Palocsay Award in Undergraduate Research is given to an outstanding undergraduate research student. This award was established in memory of Professor Frank A. Palocsay.   Throughout his career, Prof. Palocsay mentored numerous students in undergraduate research, and he was at the forefront of the Department's efforts to incorporate computer technology into teaching.

Eric Vess ('12)

D. S. Amenta Award The D. S. Amenta Award is given to recognize either a junior or senior with the qualities of leadership, citizenship, self-sacrifice and a commitment to working with others. The award recipient will have also demonstrated strong capabilities as a chemist and a teacher. This award was established by the family of one of Professor Amenta’s former research students.

Alisa Leavesley ('13)

Service Award The Service Award is given to a student in recognition of outstanding service to the Department. Though this award has most frequently been given to a major in the Department, any student who has provided outstanding service to the Department is eligible.

Brooke Stevens ('12)

ACS-Merck Award The ACS-Merck Award is given to an outstanding graduating senior with significant undergraduate research accomplishments and plans to attend graduate school in the chemical sciences. This award is given by the Virginia Section of the American Chemical Society and the Merck Company. The recipient is recognized at the April Meeting of the Virginia Section of the ACS along with other outstanding senior chemistry majors from colleges and universities in Virginia.

Michael Salim ('12)

Liberty Casali Scholarship This scholarship was established by family, alumni and faculty in memory and honor of Liberty Casali. Liberty was a physical chemist who taught Physical Chemistry and General Chemistry for 10 years. Students are encouraged to apply for this scholarship while enrolled in Physical Chemistry I.

ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry Undergraduate Award in Analytical Chemistry This award was established in 1967 by the ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry to encourage student interest in analytical chemistry and to recognize students who display an aptitude for a career in the field.

Brian Huffman

ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry Undergraduate Award in Inorganic Chemistry This award was established in 2009 by the ACS Division of Inorganic Chemistry to recognize achievement by undergraduate students in inorganic chemistry and to encourage further study in the field. Recipients of the award have demonstrated excellence in inorganic chemistry at the undergraduate level and have future plans that include a career in chemistry.
POLYED Undergraduate Award in Organic Chemistry The POLYED Undergraduate Award in Organic Chemistry recognizes outstanding performance in Organic Chemistry by a chemistry major whose future plans include a career in chemistry. This Award is sponsored by POLYED, the National Information Center for Polymer Education.

American Institute of Chemists Award The American Institute of Chemists Award is given to recognize the achievements of an outstanding senior majoring in chemistry or biochemistry. This award is given in recognition of a demonstrated record of ability, leadership, and professional promise.

Seth Ensign ('12)

Degesch America Award The Degesch America Award has historically been given to an outstanding graduating senior chemistry major with the highest departmental GPA. It is made possible by the support of Degesch America, Inc., a chemical company headquartered in the Shenandoah Valley.

Alexa DeLuca ('12)

Hypercube Scholar Award The Hypercube Scholar Award is given to a student who demonstrates scholastic excellence in chemistry. The recipient is a senior who has conducted outstanding research in the Department, and who, in the judgment of the faculty, would most benefit from this award.

Jindong Kang ('12)

CRC Freshman Chemistry Achievement Award This annual award is given in recognition of outstanding scholastic achievement in chemistry by a first year student.
