Summer Research Experience For Undergraduates

PROGRAM: Through funding from the National Science Foundation and other agenices, the JMU Chemistry Department will again sponsor a summer research experience for undergraduates. In this program, students will work under the direction of a professor and conduct full-time independent research. Research projects will be available in all subject areas in chemistry depending upon availability of faculty members. Past research projects have included: HPLC/GC Analysis of Pesticides and Herbicides (Analytical Chemistry), Synthesis And Characterization Of Luminescent Transition Metal Complexes For Use As Molecular Probes Or Reporters (Physical Chemistry), Synthesis Of Aluminum Isopropoxide And Molybdenum Complexes (Organic Synthesis), Ferroelectric And Piezoelectric Ceramic Materials And Scanning Probe Microscopy (Materials Science), and Infrared Studies of RecA (Biophysical Chemistry). Students will be introduced to library literature searching and gain "hands-on" experience using the various instruments in the department. Other aspects of the program include weekly seminars given by the participants and speakers from outside JMU. Social events will also be held as part of the program.

DATES: May 24, 2010 - July 31, 2010

STIPEND: Undergraduate students will receive a $3,800 scholarship stipend for full participation.

ACCOMODATIONS: Students will be provided an opportunity for housing on the JMU campus at no cost to the participant.

ELIGIBILITY: Undergraduate students (current sophomores or juniors) who will graduate in December 2010 or later. Chemistry majors receive priority; others will be considered. Participants must be United States Citizens or permanent residents.  This site has a regional focus.  We are also interested in supporting deaf or hearing-impaired participants.

APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 12, 2010 for non-JMU student applicants.
