PROGRAM:
Through funding from the
National Science Foundation and other agenices, the JMU Chemistry
Department will again sponsor a summer research experience for
undergraduates. In this program, students will work under the
direction of a professor and conduct full-time independent
research. Research projects will be available in all subject areas
in chemistry depending upon availability of faculty members. Past
research projects have included: HPLC/GC Analysis of Pesticides
and Herbicides (Analytical Chemistry), Synthesis And
Characterization Of Luminescent Transition Metal Complexes For Use
As Molecular Probes Or Reporters (Physical Chemistry),
Synthesis Of Aluminum Isopropoxide And Molybdenum
Complexes (Organic Synthesis), Ferroelectric And
Piezoelectric Ceramic Materials And Scanning Probe Microscopy
(Materials Science), and Infrared Studies of RecA
(Biophysical Chemistry). Students will be introduced to library
literature searching and gain "hands-on" experience using the
various instruments
in the department. Other aspects of the program
include weekly seminars given by the participants and speakers from
outside JMU. Social events will also be held as part of the
program.
