Jeremy Harris, a JMU sophomore majoring in chemistry, is the recipient of a national scholarship awarded by the Scholars Program of the American Chemical Society. This scholarship is awarded to qualified applicants who want to enter the fields of chemistry, biochemistry, chemical engineering, or other chemically related fields. One of the goals of this program is to help students acquire skills and credentials needed for success in the chemical sciences. Last summer, Jeremy was a participant in the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program in Materials Science, funded by the Department of Defense ASSURE program.  Jeremy's research  focused on the exploration of ionic liquids as solvents and structure-directing agents in aluminophosphate synthesis.  (9-1-06)

The American Chemical Society (ACS) Student Affiliates' chapter at James Madison University has been selected to receive a Green Chemistry Chapter Award for its chapter activities conducted during the 2005-2006 academic year. green chemistry chapters are selected by the Society Committee on Education and the Green Chemistry Institute. The award will be presented will be presented at the 233rd ACS National Meeting in Chicago, IL on Sunday March 25, 2007. Seventeen chapters will receive this award.  (8/29/06)

In August 2006 Dr. Thomas Devore received the 2006 Ronald T. Pflaum Outstanding Chapter Adviser Award from Alpha Chi Sigma Fraternity (the national professional chemistry fraternity). The award was presented at UCLA  during the National Conclave. This award was instituted in 1992 in honor and memory of Dr. Ronald T. Pflaum and is presented each biennium to a chapter advisor in recognition of their ongoing contributions to the success of a chapter and continuing service to the interest of the Fraternity.  (8/29/06)
