9:30 - 9:45 Welcome and Introductions
9:45 - 11:00 Being an Effective GA/TA
This session will explore the variety of skills required to be successful in your new position. We will discuss ways of making your experience as a GA/TA rewarding for both you and your students. We will also discuss the expectations of your new position and how these expectations influence your interactions with students and faculty members.
11:00 - 11:15 Break
11:15 - 12:30 Effective Strategies for Dealing with Difficult Situations
This session will explore some difficult situations you may find yourself in as a GA/TA. This interactive session will prepare you to effectively manage a variety of sticky situations. This session is a MUST for any GA/TA who will be interacting directly with undergraduates.
12:30 - 1:00 Lunch
1:00 - 2:30 Presentation Skills and Classroom Management
Will you be making announcements in class? Will you be teaching short segments of the class? Will you be guest lecturing? Will you be assisting during lab and answering student questions? Will you be using the Blackboard system to help your professor manage the class? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then this session is for YOU! This session will help prepare you for presenting in class and managing aspects of the course using the Blackboard system.
