Immediate Feedback Assessment Technique (IF-AT)

Description

IF-ATs are a new type of scratch-off multiple choice answer sheet. They look like a scantron, but they are MUCH better because IF-ATs provide instructors with feedback regarding the number of attempts each student needed to determine the correct answer. IF-ATs are avilable in 10, 25, and 50 question formats.

How does the IF-AT work?

Students read the multiple-choice question posed by the instructor. They select their answer and scratch off the corresponding rectangle. If the student selected an incorrect answer, the rectangle will be blank. However, if they chose the correct answer, a reinforcing star will appear in the rectangle. The instructor determines the number of points awarded for selecting the correct answer on the 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th attempt. IF-ATs are especially effective when used with group work. In this case, one IF-AT is provided and students collaboratively discuss the question and propose an answer. *NOTE: JMU faculty are encouraged to collect the IF-ATs after use by students.

Benefits of using IF-ATs

  • Immediate feedback to students about the correct answer.
  • Improved learning and retention.
  • Active learning and better test taking.
  • Engaging and fun!
