Information Literacy in the Major Workshop

May 7-9, 2008

Faculty teaching courses in the major

Do you want help in developing resource-based assignments that promote research skills? JMU Libraries, in cooperation with the Center for Faculty Innovation, is sponsoring a workshop, *Information Literacy in the Major*, to be held on *May 7-9, 2008*. This 3-day workshop will pair teaching faculty with liaison librarians to collaborate on integrating information literacy concepts into JMU coursework by modifying a syllabus, designing effective assignments, and planning instruction. Faculty attending the workshop will receive a $1,000 stipend.

The workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Terry Mech, Library Director at King s College in PA, a nationally known expert in information literacy and assessment.

This is the third annual information literacy workshop offered by JMU Libraries, and the second to focus on assignments in the major.

Information literacy: a set of skills defined as knowing how to find, evaluate and effectively use information, is a key outcome of higher education. The goal is to promote resource-based learning outside the classroom and to equip students with skills that will enable them to continue to learn in their discipline.

More Information: See the workshop website (http://www.lib.jmu.edu/ilworkshop08/) for more details and to download an application form. The workshop is open to full-time faculty teaching courses within a major.

Deadline for applications: February 28, 2008
