Preface

Program Description

Preface is an invitation to faculty to participate actively in the 1787 Orientation Week experience for new students. Groups of students from residence halls meet with instructional faculty to get a preview of what a college classroom will be like during OWeek. We ask the students to read a selected text and come prepared to engage with faculty on the themes discovered in the readings. Preface facilitators host a group of students for 90 minutes on the Thursday before classes start. This year's reading selection explores the theme, Ways of Knowing and are available from the libraries here: www.lib.jmu.edu/preface. These CFI sessions will assist faculty to prepare to facilitate a Preface session.

The goals of the Preface Program are to: help new students understand how preparing for a university classroom differs from high school, to encourage our newest student's to be open-minded to new ideas, and to introduce them to academic culture at JMU.
