January 24, 2008 - Spirituality Dialogues

- 80% are interested in spirituality
- 76% are searching for meaning or purpose
- 74% have discussions about the meaning of life with friends
- 80% discuss religion or spirituality with friends
- 47% seek out opportunities to grow spiritually

What does this mean for you as faculty? Have you ever shied away from a conversation with a student because it involved religion, God, belief, or spirituality?

Spirituality Dialogues is a passport program that helps students engage in healthy dialogue surrounding deep issues of meaning and purpose. Students share their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs, while attempting to gain an understanding and respect for those around them.

If you would like to be a part of this effort to help students wrestle with the big questions in life, please attend an interest session:

January 25, 2008 - Madison Mentor Program

Are you looking for a way to connect with students on a one-to-one basis? Do you want to see firsthand the impact your conversations and interactions have on students? If so, I encourage you to learn more about the Madison Master Mentor program run through the Office of Judicial Affairs.

Students who violate university policy may be sanctioned to complete between 8-15 mentoring sesssions and, in some cases, will also serve 25-75 service-learning hours in an office on campus. With just one hour a week, you could help a student get back on the road to success!

Check out this powerpoint of reflection paper quotes from Civic Learning students to see the impact you could have!

If you're interested in becoming a mentor, or would like more information, contact me at meyergi@jmu.edu. Spring training is scheduled for January 25 from 1-5 pm but we can work around your schedule to get you involved if you can't make it.
