"The Courage to Teach"
Parker J. Palmer
Spring 2005 Faculty Book Discussion was facilitated by Louise Temple.
Louise Temple
Louise Temple is the new head of biology at JMU. She came to James Madison after 10 years on the faculty at Drew University, a small liberal arts school in New Jersey. There she was active in promoting pedagogical innovations across campus, as well as arranging workshop opportunities for the biology and other science faculty. She is interested in interdisciplinary studies, and has team-taught courses such as "Gender Issues in Science" with faculty in English and Women's Studies.
Louise's area of research interest is disease causation by a bacterial pathogen of turkeys; this has brought forth many jokes since she moved to such a major poultry-growing area! She uses research primarily as a teaching and training tool for young scientists, but also has external funding from NIH and the US Department of Agriculture and publishes in the field of pathogenesis.
