Geographic Genealogy
by Johnathan Walker, GGEOG
Walker requires each student in his GGEOG courses to produce a 5-8 pp paper that interprets his or her immediate family’s historical geography of migration (or lack thereof) and employment. Key issues include job relocations (voluntary and involuntary), lay-offs (downsizing), and career changes, but also moves of any kind (for any reason: social, political, security, education or any other) or, in some cases, why the family NEVER moved. The assignment lends itself to awareness of socioeconomics, race, gender, and other forms of diversity.
