IQ Testing Slides: Buck vs. Bell
by Zewe Serpell, GPSYCH
These Powerpoint slides are used in the context of an in class discussion about intelligence that precedes a student debate about the pros and cons of the use of modern intelligence tests. The slides are designed to familiarize students with the history of the IQ concept and associated tests, but more importantly to stimulate thinking about the implications of using labels, ascribing particular attributes to individuals whom we consider "intelligent" or "less intelligent" and how research can be used to promote pernicious ideology that can have important social and policy implications. The discussion revolves primarily around the notion of diversity - whether diversity is important, what are the most important human characteristics, and who gets to decide which characteristics determine one's worth, social status and right to reproduce.
