Jim McConnel is an associate vice president in the division of Student Affairs and University Planning. He works directly with the offices of Judicial Affairs, Residence Life, and University Unions. Jim also serves as the university’s dean of students and as an assistant professor in the graduate psychology program. Before coming to JMU in 1986, Jim worked at the University of South Florida and at Rollins College. Jim’s roles while working at JMU have included directors’ positions in the Office of Residence Life, the Office of Admissions and the Counseling and Student Development Center; and coordinator of the graduate College Student Personnel Administration program. Jim earned a BA in Business Administration and an MA in Counselor Education from the University of South Florida, and a doctorate in Higher Education Administration from the University of Virginia. His professional interests are in the areas of psychosocial and cognitive development during the college years.
