James Madison University has established a new College of Graduate and Professional Programs to coordinate graduate and postgraduate education throughout the university. JMU’s Board of Visitors approved the college in October 2001. CGAPP replaces the former Graduate School office and the Office of Continuing Education.

CGAPP seeks to establish a more visible presence for graduate, post-graduate and professional programs through strategic program planning at the graduate levels and transitional programming for students moving from undergraduate to graduate programs. CGAPP further seeks to emphasize and enhance JMU’s professional certification and licensure programs.

JMU’s Graduate School was established in 1954 when the Virginia Board of Education authorized Madison College to offer programs leading to the Master of Science in Education degree. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools approved these graduate programs the same year. The College of Graduate and Professional Programs is now authorized to offer graduate programs leading to master’s degrees, Educational Specialist degrees, Doctor of Philosophy degrees and Doctor of Psychology degrees. Many graduate programs offer concentration areas. Please refer to the Graduate Catalog for details or review this information electronically at www.jmu.edu/gradprograms/catalog/03.

Professional Programs is part of the College of Graduate and Professional Programs. It is the responsibility of Professional Programs to oversee credit and non-credit, off-campus, continuing education courses and professional certificate programs offered by JMU. Professional Programs also oversees the enrollment of non-degree seeking students (referred to as special students).

Special Student Enrollment

Term special, transient special and adult special students are permitted to register for up to 11 hours of course credit each semester, but are limited to a total of 18 credit hours. Senior citizen, high school and auditing special students must have departmental approval. Special students who are entering the Adult Degree Program are permitted to register for up to 11 hours of course credit each semester, but are limited to a total of 30 credit hours. There is no limit on credit hour enrollment for post-baccalaureate and post-master’s special students.

It should be noted that admission as a special student does not constitute admission to a program. Admission to a program at JMU must be done through the specific program. Enrollment as a special student is completed through the Web site at http://www.jmu.edu/professionalprograms.

Legal residents of the State of Virginia who have reached 60 years of age before the beginning of an academic term and who have a taxable income that did not exceed $15,000 for the year proceeding the term may register for and enroll in courses as a full-time or part-time student and pay no tuition or fees except fees established for the purpose of paying for course materials, such as laboratory fees. Senior citizens shall be subject to the admissions requirements of the institution and a determination by the institution of its ability to offer the course or courses for which the senior citizen registers. A senior citizen shall only be admitted to a course in which enrollment is sought after all tuition-paying students have been accommodated. A senior citizen tuition waiver form must be submitted to Professional Programs to determine eligibility according to section 23-38:56 of the Code of Virginia.
