James Madison University has
established a new College of Graduate and Professional Programs to coordinate
graduate and postgraduate education throughout the university. JMU’s Board of
Visitors approved the college in October 2001. CGAPP replaces the former
Graduate School office and the Office of Continuing Education.
CGAPP seeks to establish a
more visible presence for graduate, post-graduate and professional programs
through strategic program planning at the graduate levels and transitional
programming for students moving from undergraduate to graduate programs. CGAPP
further seeks to emphasize and enhance JMU’s professional certification and
licensure programs.

JMU’s Graduate School was
established in 1954 when the Virginia Board of Education authorized Madison
College to offer programs leading to the Master of Science in Education degree.
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools approved these graduate
programs the same year. The College of Graduate and Professional Programs is
now authorized to offer graduate programs leading to master’s degrees,
Educational Specialist degrees, Doctor of Philosophy degrees and Doctor of
Psychology degrees. Many graduate programs offer concentration areas. Please
refer to the Graduate Catalog for details or review this information
electronically at www.jmu.edu/gradprograms/catalog/03.

students (referred to as special students).

Waiver
Legal residents of the State
of Virginia who have reached 60 years of age before the beginning of an
academic term and who have a taxable income that did not exceed $15,000 for the
year proceeding the term may register for and enroll in courses as a full-time
or part-time student and pay no tuition or fees except fees established for the
purpose of paying for course materials, such as laboratory fees. Senior citizens
shall be subject to the admissions requirements of the institution and a

for which the senior citizen registers. A senior citizen shall only be admitted

have been accommodated. A senior citizen tuition waiver form must be submitted
