James Madison University

Over the time I have worked at JMU as an administrative faculty member, I have been privileged to collaborate with many of my faculty colleagues. As a result, I have been aware of the commitment they have made to our students. From 2001 – 2005, I had the unique opportunity to see the university through the eyes of a student because my daughter attended JMU, graduating with a B.S. degree in Psychology in May 2005. It was a great privilege to learn to know my fellow faculty members in this way and while this perspective was much different from that of a peer, it strongly affirmed my positive impressions of JMU as well as deepening my respect for my colleagues. Throughout her undergraduate career, my daughter was challenged to stretch herself and to develop intellectually and emotionally within a secure environment. She engaged in discussions both inside and outside the classroom setting, with peers as well as with faculty members. When she struggled, she was able to find assistance and support. Seeing her engage with diverse individuals and ideas was very exciting.

As parents who are preparing to bring your students to JMU, I hope you will feel comfortable knowing that faculty and staff will be providing them the same structure. Encourage your students to seek challenges and take risks. Support them when they share their struggles with new ideas or tasks. When they need help, direct them to the many people and programs on campus that are available for assistance. My colleagues give our students the gift of their knowledge, attention and encouragement to help them grow into confident young adults. I hope your JMU experience will be as rewarding as it was for our family.
