Services for Graduate Students

Career and Academic Planning offers graduate students career counseling services, career information resources, and job search assistance.

Career Counseling
Graduate students can work individually with career counselors in our office to discuss career decision-making, career planning and implementation. To make an appointment, call 540-568-6555.

Career Information Resources
Vital to career planning, implementation, and job search is access to career resources. Our office maintains an extensive career resource center located on the 3rd floor of Wilson Hall.

Job Search Assistance
We offer programming on resume writing, interviewing, mock interviews, networking, and the job search strategies. Employers representing the fields of business, sciences, health and human services, technology, and education post job openings on Recruit-A-Duke our online recruiting database that connects students with employment opportunities.

In regards to the job search, graduate students are different from undergraduates in two ways. First: they tend to have more experience, and many times varied experiences. Second: they tend to seek more specialized career opportunities. Graduate degree programs at JMU range, for example, from the Ph.D programs in Assessment & Measurement and Clinical Audiology to Ed.S programs in Community Counseling and School Psychology to Masters programs in Art, Business, Education, Mathematics and Public Administration to name a few. Because there is such a wide range of job targets for graduate students, we encourage graduate students to work individually with one of our career counselors so we can help tailor their job search.
