Recruiting Services Student Media Specialist

OFFICE DESCRIPTION: As a part of Career and Academic Planning, the Recruiting Services Program provides opportunities for employers to interact with students in a variety of ways to include on campus interviews, information sessions, mock interviews, and career related programs. Through these interactions students acquire knowledge concerning their own career interests and become engaged in the recruiting process in order to obtain internship or full-time positions. JOB DUTIES: As a student assistant in the Recruiting Services Program, the selected individual will assume a leading role in creating content related to the operations of Recruiting Services. The individual selected for this position will also be responsible for the continual updating of our current media files and aiding in the marketing of various workshops and programs. This can include, but is not limited to, PowerPoint Slides for E-boards, fliers, maintaining social media outlets (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Blogger or Wordpress, and Pinterest) and any other marketing related material. In addition, this role will carry the responsibility of providing technical assistance to JMU students for our online career management system, Recruit-A-Duke, as well as answering general questions.

QUALIFICATIONS: The selected individual will have a working knowledge of basic Microsoft programs (Word/PowerPoint/Excel/Publisher), and the necessary technical skills to become proficient at troubleshooting issues with Recruit-A-Duke and Blogger or Wordpress. Proficient knowledge of design programs (Photoshop and/or InDesign) and the Mac operating system t is required. Must be detail-oriented, able to multitask,creative, and able to take an innovative approach to develop content for marketing outreach & programs. Website Student Assistant

The Website SA is responsible for updating and maintaining the Career & Academic Planning (CAP) website. In 2013-2014, our website will be run through the new Cascade platform. Please visit http://www.jmu.edu/cascade/about/about-cascade.shtml to learn more about this content management system.

Duties include:

  • Creating and updating individual pages of the website, and styling overall.
  • Working one on one with office staff on website updates, as requested.
  • Collaborating with other student assistants on the media team to brainstorm the best ways to reach fellow JMU students.
  • Attending campus workshops or viewing online tutorials to further develop technical skills, if needed.
  • Participating in weekly supervisor meetings and monthly staff meetings with the other student assistants in CAP.
  • Providing general office assistance as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

All majors are encouraged to apply. Characteristics that the ideal candidate will possess:

  • Experience coding and managing websites.
  • Attention to detail (in coding and editing content throughout our website).
  • Organizational skills to effectively categorize and manage content (pages, images, folders etc.) for the CAP website.
  • Ability to prioritize, manage time efficiently, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must take initiative, be able to work independently, and be able to self-teach new concepts in coding and content management to troubleshoot issues as they arise.
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely, in order to express ideas and convey information. The person in this role may be asked to occasionally write content for our website, but most content is already created; so editing and coding will be more of the focus.

Other qualifications for the position include:

  • Required: HTML and CSS (to both understand and edit source code)
  • Optional: Dreamweaver, Graphic design (Fireworks, PhotoShop, Illustrator, etc.), PHP, JavaScript, jQuery, experience with Cascade or other content management systems, editing experience (for websites or print publications), mobile app development, DoForm configuration and coding.

Video Student Assistant

DUTIES

The Video Student Assistant will be responsible for filming and editing videos and taking photos for the office of Career & Academic Planning.

Video projects will enhance Career & Academic Planning's presence online and help educate the JMU population about our services and events. Video topics could include choosing a major, finding a job, going to graduate school, professional attire, etc. - all projects would be related to students' academic and career decisions.

While the position will mainly focus on videos, this person will also be asked to photograph departmental events. Photography may also be requested to have still images to incorporate into videos or publications. Sometimes video and photography requests will require evening hours (example: filming a presentation in its entirety).

The person in this role will also be asked to:

  • Schedule times to film interviews or scenic shots around campus. Attention to detail and organization are very important when arranging times to meet with subjects and film around campus.
  • Check out, reserve, and return video and photography equipment (cameras, lighting, microphones, etc.) from JMU Media Resources as needed for projects.
  • Meet with staff members to brainstorm, plan, and create videos highlighting events/services that they coordinate.
  • Collaborate with other student assistants on the media team to brainstorm the best ways to reach fellow JMU students.
  • Attend weekly supervisor meetings and monthly staff meetings with the other student assistants in CAP.
  • Provide general office assistance as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

All majors are encouraged to apply. Characteristics of the ideal candidate:

  • Experience shooting and editing digital video. Proficient knowledge of video editing and finishing programs (Final Cut, Avid, or other similar software) is required. Please indicate your experience with these and other software applications on your resume.
  • Experience with digital photography (composition, lighting, editing, etc.). Proficient knowledge of photo editing programs (Photoshop or similar software) is required.
  • Ability to prioritize, manage time efficiently, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills to collaborate on projects supervised by a variety of staff members on a daily basis.
  • Must be detail-oriented, able to multitask, creative, and able to take an innovative approach to develop content for video and photo projects.
  • Flexibility in work hours. You will be able to set a regular schedule of 10 hours a week, but sometimes these hours will need to be modified in order to attend certain events or film certain subjects. Evenings are sometimes required, but not weekends. We will definitely work with your other commitments and class schedule.
  • The following technical skills are not expected, but please let us know if you have experience with: Motionography (After Effects or Motion), Compression (Compressor), DVD Ripping/File Conversion (MPEG Streamclip, Handbrake), Screencast/Tutorial Software (Adobe Captivate), Audio editing (Soundtrack Pro, Garageband, Audacity, etc.)

Publicity Student Assistant

The Publicity SA assists staff members in the office of Career & Academic Planning with the design of campus marketing materials in a variety of mediums.

DUTIES

  • Create publicity for the office of Career and Academic Planning. Advertising will promote our services, programs, and events. 
  • Meet with staff members to help plan publicity for events/services they coordinate. 
  • Collaborate with other student assistants on the media team to brainstorm the best ways to reach fellow JMU students. 
  • Use a variety of approaches to get the word out about what CAP has to offer (including but not limited to fliers, Eboards, bulk emails, social media, table tents, Grafton movie ads, etc.). 
  • Use graphic design software to create marketing pieces (specific programs listed below). 
  • Follow JMU procedures and deadlines related to publicity on campus. 
  • Attend weekly supervisor meetings and monthly staff meetings with the other student assistants in CAP. 
  • Provide general office assistance as needed.  

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proficient knowledge of graphic design programs (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, or other similar software) is required. Please indicate your experience with these and other software applications on your resume.

Career Educators (CE's)

Career Educators (CE's) are undergraduate peer educators who volunteer 4-6 hours a week in the office of Career and Academic Planning. CE's create and present career outreach programs to student organizations and residence halls, lead tours of the Career and Academic Planning resource center, review resumes, and assist with special events including Career Fairs. Office Student Assistant

The Office Student Assistant provides administrative support for the office of Career and Academic Planning, CAP Resource Center, Career Educator Program and other administrative duties as assigned. This is a Federal Work Study position, so students eligible for FWS are encouraged to apply. We are looking for a detail oriented, organized individual. Duties will include:
  • Organize and monitor work schedule for a group of 10-12 volunteers representing the office.
  • Maintain scheduling and tracking system for tours, events and presentations providing timely communication between group members, supervisor and constituents requesting services.
  • Communicate scheduling updates at weekly staff meetings.
  • Answer general student questions at front desk or in Resource Center.
  • Assist in maintaining general physical upkeep for the Resource Center (our career library) and promotional information on table tents.

Summer Website Student Assistant

The Summer Website SA is responsible for updating and maintaining the Career & Academic Planning website. This student will be assisting the office transition pages from our old design to new templates as we launch a major redesign of our site in the Fall. The position is 10 hours per week.
  • Updating and revising web content.
  • Creating and updating templates and pages of the website within Dreamweaver.
  • Developing basic graphics for the web- navigational menus, etc.
  • Attending campus workshops to further develop skills, if needed.
  • Occasionally scanning materials to post to the web; converting documents to PDF.

All majors are encouraged to apply. Qualifications for the position include:

Graduate Assistants (GA's)

Graduate assistants are vital members of the Career and Academic Planning staff. They use their talents to support Career and Academic Planning services and programs 20 hours a week. Responsibilities generally fall in the areas of direct student contact and support to a variety of our programs.

Some typical job responsibilities may include helping students create resumes, facilitating career decision making workshops, helping with events such as fairs, participating in office committees, assisting with visiting employers, working with Recruit-A-Duke online database and providing administrative support.

Successful graduate assistant candidates will have strong skills in verbal communication, interpersonal interactions, time and project management, teamwork, initiative, Microsoft Office programs, and giving presentations.
