Resource Center Peer Educators (RC Peers)

The office of Career and Academic Planning employs students to serve in the peer centered Resource Center and to support all services and events we offer to the JMU community. As peer educators, the student staff educates students on how to research information related to their academic and career choices and offer strategies to make steps towards reaching their goals. Electronic and print resources are available to inform students about their personal interests and abilities in relation to occupational, internship, employment and job search strategies. Each student position is funded by either Federal Work Study or Institutional resources. Eligibility for Federal Work Study positions is determined by the office of Financial Aid and is need based. Institutional positions are open to all students with no eligibility requirements.

Career Education Officers (CEO's)

Career Education Officers (CEO's) are undergraduate peer educators who volunteer 4-6 hours a week in the office of Career and Academic Planning. CEO's create and present career outreach programs to student organizations and residence halls, lead tours of the Career and Academic Planning resource center, and assist with special events including Career Fairs. Recruiting Services Student Assistant

The Recruiting Services SA is responsible for assume a leading role in assisting JMU students with MadisonTRAK and other general questions. Duties include:
  • Taking a leading role in presenting MadisonTRAK workshops to students.
  • Partnering with On-Campus Interviewing (OCI) Assistant Coordinator to construct MadisonTRAK Workshop presentation and schedule workshop times for each semester.
  • Partnering with Assistant Coordinator to tweak presentation as needed.
  • Partnering with Graduate Assistant in OCI marketing efforts.
  • Acting as MadisonTRAK specialist to assist students in the office (lead role) and assist with answering emails from the MadisonTRAK mailbox on Microsoft Outlook.
  • Attending campus workshops to further develop programming skills, if needed.
  • Assist with nightly employer presentations in Sonner Hall as needed.

Qualifications for the position include:

  • Required: Excellent interpersonal and presentation skills
  • Preferred: Working knowledge of PowerPoint and Microsoft Excel

Website Student Assistant

The Website SA is responsible for updating and maintaining the Career & Academic Planning website. Duties include:
  • Updating and revising web content, as requested.
  • Working with the CAP staff to design new features for the website.
  • Creating and updating templates for pages of the website within Dreamweaver.
  • Developing graphics for the web: photos, banners, menus, etc.
  • Scanning materials to post to the web; converting documents to PDF.
  • Attending campus workshops to further develop skills, if needed.
  • Periodically participating in departmental web committee meetings.

All majors are encouraged to apply. Qualifications for the position include:

  • Required: HTML
  • Preferred: Dreamweaver, CSS, JavaScript, graphic design (Fireworks, PhotoShop, etc.)
  • Optional: Quicktime VR, streaming video, podcasting, scanning, digital photography, DoForm configuration and coding, Adobe Acrobat, FrontPage

Publicity Student Assistant

The Publicity SA assists staff members in the office of Career & Academic Planning with the design of campus marketing materials in a variety of mediums.

Summer Advising & Orientation Student Assistant

The Summer SA assists with freshman advising during summer Orientation by running errands across campus, filing, copying, compiling advisor materials, and performing data entry.

Graduate Assistants (GA's)

Graduate assistants are vital members of the Career and Academic Planning staff. They use their talents to support Career and Academic Planning services and programs 20 hours a week. Responsibilities generally fall in the areas of direct student contact and support to a variety of our programs.

Some typical job responsibilities may include serving as an academic advisor, teaching workshops related to internship and job search skills, helping students create resumes, facilitating career decision making workshops, helping with events such as fairs, participating in office committees, assisting with visiting employers, and providing administrative support.

Successful graduate assistant candidates will have strong skills in verbal communication, interpersonal interactions, time and project management, Microsoft Office programs, and giving presentations.

Positions available for 2008-2009: 1 GA (for '08-09 only)
Stipend and hours per week: 20 hours per week; Graduate Assistant stipend information
