In Spring 2009, the College of Arts and Letters invited its instructors to compose brief statements that explain how they address diversity pedagogically and/or as course topics. The following pages present these statements, sorted by department. We hope that the statements are useful for (prospective) students with an interest in diversity, academic advisors who want to know more about the courses they advise students on, and instructors who want to learn from what other instructors do. The diversity statements do not replace the official course descriptions, which can be found in the JMU undergraduate and graduate catalogs.
If you are an instructor in the College of Arts and Letters and would like to add a statement about your course(s) to the list, please contact Andreas Broscheid. For the results of a somewhat similar project on pedagogical strategies involving diversity conducted by the General Education Diversity Advisory Board, see http://www.jmu.edu/cfi/diversity/.
