The faculty of James Madison University is committed to providing its students with the best educational experience possible. Within that education is the incorporation of personal computing into the everyday tasks required both in and out of the classroom. James Madison University recognizes that the expense of a personal computer may not be feasible for all students and currently does not require the purchase of a personal computer. However, if you already own a personal computer that meets or exceeds the minimum system configurations, bring it to school. Educationally priced computer hardware and software are sold through the JMU Bookstore to faculty, students and staff of James Madison University. We offer a wide variety of PC and Apple configurations. The JMU Bookstore Computer Program, in partnership with these manufacturers, is designed to provide the best possible prices within the terms of the educational agreements. The JMU Bookstore Computer Program works hard to offer the best value in Dell and Apple computer systems for JMU students. Our goal is to offer computer systems that are reliable and full-featured enough to last all four years at prices that are up to 20% less than the manufacturer's standard retail price. We work closely with the university to ensure our computers have the right components and warranty to receive the highest level of support. We also work with the individual colleges to make sure we have computer systems that will meet or exceed their recommendations. Other stores may advertise lower priced computers, but in most cases, the price of the computer and the upgrades necessary to match one of our systems is significantly higher. Even then, the computer may have to be returned to manufacturer or the retailer for warranty repairs and it probably won't be as reliable.

Microsoft Student Select Agreement
The Microsoft Select Contract is a JMU/Microsoft contract that enables JMU faculty, staff & students to purchase CD media and license to use specified Microsoft products at substantial discounted price. There are a variety of Microsoft products that can be purchased under the Microsoft Select Contract, including:
If using a Windows Operating System:
- Microsoft Windows Vista Business Operating System -- $90.00
- Microsoft Office 2007 Professional Plus - Includes the core Office 2007 programs - 2007 Versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Publisher and Outlook -- $90.00
If using a Macintosh Operating System:
- Microsoft Office 2004 - requires Mac OS X operating system. Includes Microsoft Word 2004, PowerPoint 2004, Excel 2004, and Entourage 2004. -- $90.00
Purchasing A Microsoft Select License - To purchase a Microsoft Select License, JMU Faculty, Staff & Students must complete the Microsoft Select License Agreement. Faculty and Staff wanting to get a Work At Home License for Microsoft Office should contact the JMU Bookstore Computer Program for details. Upon completion of the Microsoft Select License Agreement, this form will become the legal license for the software the student is purchasing. As a convenience, we've posted the Microsoft Select agreement online. Download the following before purchasing your CD media and license. We must have a signed Student Select Agreement on file before releasing the CD media and license.

JMU Wireless Initiative
The Cisco VPN Client is required to connect to the JMU Wireless Network.
The VPN client establishes a secure connection to the Wireless Lan gateway using your JMU e-ID and password for authentication. There are no client or access point specific settings that need to be configured to connect to the JMU Wireless Network. Click on JMU Wireless Network for information on downloading and configuring the VPN Client.
All support for configuring your laptop and installing the Cisco VPN client is handled through the HelpDesk. You can either call the HelpDesk at 8-3555, or you can submit an on-line trouble call.
PC Services
JMU Information Technology is an authorized Dell and Apple computer hardware warranty repair center, providing warranty repair at our campus facility. These services include:
- Testing, diagnosis and replacement/repair of Dell and Apple manufacturer defective parts on computer systems under warranty.
- Reloading operating system and installation of anti-virus and anti-spyware software, if hard drive requires replacement.
- Facilitating repairs that are required to be performed by the manufacturer.
- On systems with Dell's CompleteCare service plan, facilitating the replacement of computers damaged beyond repair.
