Why shouldn't I just buy a discount laptop from my local electronics store?

Compatibility - The typical discount computer from a big-box retailer cannot be customized and comes with the Windows Vista Home Premium operating system which is not supported by the JMU Computing Helpdesk. Additionally, the free anti-virus software provided by JMU can only be installed on a 32-bit edition of Windows Vista. Finally, the Home versions of Windows cannot run the software required to access JMU's wireless network or to access JMU's library system from off-campus. Computers purchased from the JMU Bookstore are compatible with JMU's campus network and provided software and are supported by JMU's Computing Helpdesk.

Hidden Costs - Upgrading one of these systems to work with JMU's software usually requires the purchase of a supported version of Windows Vista (Business 32 bit or Ultimate 32 bit), a complete reformatting of the hard drive and a clean installation of the new operating system. Because JMU only provides phone-based software support, you would have to install the new operating system by yourself or hire a third-party to do it for you. Computers purchased from the JMU Bookstore do not require the purchase and installation of a new operating system for compatibility and support.

Warranty Support - The typical discount computer has only a one year mail-in warranty. If something breaks, you have to ship your computer back to the manufacturer and go without a computer while you wait for them to repair it and return it to you. Students who purchase their computer from the JMU Bookstore can receive on-campus repairs and a loaner computer* from the JMU Computing Helpdesk for the three years that their computer is under warranty.
