Many colleges and universities offer NSF-funded Research Experience for Undergrduates (REU) programs.  To find them go to the NSF  page "Search for an REU Site".

Consider attending a Biological Station summer session where you can take field classes and/or do field research.  They can lead to an amazing, memorable experience.  The Organization of Biological Field Stations maintains links to hundreds of stations.

Browse the extensive list of paid Co-op/Internship and Research opportunities in biology and biotechnology maintained by Tom Frederick in the Biology Department at Rochester Institute of Technology,  Read the pages completely and plan to spend some time at this set of pages - well worth it if you are interested in a summer opportunity away from JMU.
