JMU Biology Professors to Lead American Society for Microbiology Assessment Residency.

Drs Carol Hurney, Patrice Ludwig and Kerry Cresawn, along with one other professor from Johns Hopkins University, will lead and facilitate the 2013-14 ASM-NSF Biology Scholars Program Assessment Residency. The yearlong residency guides scholars in developing and refining assessment tools and measurable learning outcomes for students.

Congratulations to our students!

Recently the Phi Beta Kappa Best Thesis award was made to Jessica Holland.  Her mentor is Dr Reid Harris.

Biology students also received two of the three prestigious Hillcrest Scholarships made by the Honors Program; they support a student's travel and living expenses for a summer:
The Hillcrest Research Award was made Joseph Balsamo.  His mentor is Dr Mark Gabriele.
The Hillcrest Global Studies Award was made to Emily Thyroff.  Her mentor is Dr Heather Griscom.

Drs Susan Halsell, Mark Gabriele and Roshna Wunderlich were awarded 4VA minigrants at a ceremony with President Alger on Friday February 15th.

Biology Graduate success story

Matt Wallace, Dr Mark Gabriele's research student who graduated last year but has stayed on to continue his research for a year, is featured on the JMU website as an example of a JMU student success story.

BioMath Down Under

 JMU's emphasis on integrating mathematics with biology has attracted the attention of an international audience. Dr. Kyle Seifert, associate professor of biology, will get to address that audience in December when he travels to Sydney, Australia to deliver a keynote address during a Quantitative Skills in Science Symposium.READ MORE

This fund will enable the purchase of artwork and displays that support the Bioscience Building's theme of Biology on Display. Two contributions have already been made. Graduate student Anna Dinh has been selected to attend the International Network of Universities Summer Master School for Global Environmental Sustainability. She will spend 1 week in August inJapan learning and seeing different restoration techniques via lectures and field trips (a marine aquarium, tidal mudflats, a research vessel in Hiroshima Bay, oyster restoration area, etc).

Biotechnology major Kat Sinclair was recently awarded theFrank G. Brooks award for the best paper presentation at the district Tri-Beta convention. The judging is based on the degree of originality of the project, the organization of the report, the evidence of background knowledge of the project, and the clarity of the presentation. Kat does research with Dr Susan Halsell.

Biology Honors student,Matthew Wallace, won the 2012 Phi Beta Kappa Best thesis award for his research with Dr Mark Gabriele.  His thesis title is: “Topographic and Patterned Axonal Projections in Control and Mutant Eprhin-B2 Mice Prior to the onset of Hearing."
