James Madison
University
2002 General Obligation Bond
Projects
On November 5, Virginia voters
will be asked to approve the issuance of $900.5 million in general
obligation bonds for educational facilities in the state. Projects at James Madison University
account for $99.9 million of the total - the largest amount of any
college or university in the state.
Center for the Arts --$29.8 million
The Center for the Arts will house facilities of the School of
Theatre and Dance and be the key building in a new arts complex
planned on Main Street across from JMU's original campus. The School of Theatre and Dance has a
national reputation for excellence in spite of current sub-par
facilities. (Additional private funds are also being raised for the
project.)
Music Recital Hall --$20.9 million
JMU's School of Music has one of the top music programs in the
country but lacks a major recital facility. The school enrolls almost 400 majors and
presents more than 200 musical events each year. (Additional private funds are also being
raised for the project.)
Library at CISAT --$19.8 million
The new library will meet two critical needs at JMU: space for specialized science and technology
resources and general study seating for students. The library will be located near the College
of Integrated Science and Technology on the JMU campus east of
Interstate 81 and augment Carrier Library on the original
campus.
Renovate Miller Hall --$13.9 million
Miller Hall, built in 1972, is in dire need of extensive repairs to
its major building systems.
Originally a science building, Miller Hall will be used to house
programs in psychology, geology/environmental sciences and
sociology/anthropology after its renovation.
Renovate Harrison Hall
& Annex -- $9.7 million
Harrison Hall, built in 1915, has not had a comprehensive
renovation in 30 years. Built in
1928, Harrison Annex has never had a major renovation. After renovation, the building and annex will
house classes and offices for four major communications programs in the College of Arts and Letters.
Improve Steam Infrastructure --$4 million
This project will provide for more efficient heating for the campus
by connecting the two central heating plants that serve
JMU.
Improve Handicap
Accessibility -- $1.8 million
The work proposed under this project will affect buildings across
campus and continue JMU's commitment to bring its facilities into
compliance with the Americans with Disabilities
Act.
