This project will provide for more efficient
heating for the campus by connecting the two central heating plants
that serve JMU. Continuing
operations without connecting the two central plants exposes JMU to
an unacceptable level of risk. At
present, failure of one of the plants could result in closing
academic buildings and sending students home from unheated
residence and dining halls during cold winter weather. The status quo also exposes the university to
rising heating costs, which could be mitigated through load
balancing. Not replacing the
boilers in the University Power Plant also exposes JMU to the risk
of program disruption because its boilers are old and potentially
unreliable. There is also a safety
concern for university employees who operate the older equipment in
the west plant.
