understanding your JMU Assessment test scores in relation to other students

In the tables below, find the range containing your test score in the first column. Look across in that row to find the percentile rank associated with that score for entering first-year JMU students and for students with 45-70 credit hours (the second and third column respectively).

The percentile rank associated with your score tells you what percent of JMU students scored below your score. For example, if the percentile rank associated with your score is 60 for first-year students, 60% of entering first-year students scored below you. Percentile ranks range from 0-100 (just like percent values). If the percentile is high, it means that few students score above that score. If the percentile value is low, it means that most students score above that score.

The percentile ranks were determined based on a large random sample of JMU students at each level. Keep in mind that entering JMU students vary greatly in their level of math and science background. Similarly, the percentile ranks for students with 45-70 credit hours were based on students from a variety of majors, some students in the sample had finished their Cluster 3 requirement, and some had not.

The Natural World test is designed to measure the goals and objectives of Cluster 3 of JMU’s General Education program. Two scores are obtained from the Natural World test: a scientific reasoning (SR) score and a quantitative reasoning (QR) score. Percentile rank information is provided for each score.

Scientific Reasoning (SR) Score

SR scores reflect scientific reasoning skills. SR scores range from 0 to 66 and represent the number of items answered correctly on the entire Natural World test. Find your SR score and the associated percentile rank in the table below.

Quantitative Reasoning (QR) Score

QR scores reflect quantitative reasoning skills. QR scores range from 0 to 26 and represent the number of items answered correctly on the items from the Natural World test that involve quantitative reasoning. Find your QR score and the associated percentile rank in the table below.
