General Education
The current General Education
program was initiated in 1997, and CARS faculty have provided
consistent and stable support for the development and refinement
of Cluster goals and objectives as well as the instrumentation
by which they are assessed. CARS faculty are assigned as
liaisons and active members to each Cluster Committee and
the General Education Council. Assessment Day and other
data collection events are carefully monitored, and reports
are generated for JMU's internal use as well as for external
stakeholders such as the State Council for Higher Education
of Virginia (SCHEV).
An important role of CARS is
to work with Linda Halpern, Ph.D, Dean of University Studies, the five Cluster Coordinators/committees, and faculty
to design ways to assess general education at JMU. The
General Education Program "The Human Community" is
the core academic program of James Madison University,
required of all students regardless of their major or professional
program. Specific goals of the General Education program
are listed on their web site http://www.jmu.edu/gened.
The program promotes the cultivation of habits of the mind
and heart that are essential to informed citizens in a
democracy and world community. It helps students develop
their ability to reason and make ethical choices; to appreciate
beauty and understand the natural and social worlds they
live in, to recognize the importance of the past and work
towards a better future. General education prepares students
to become flexible thinkers and life-long learners. It
provides core knowledge, skills, and experiences essential
for successful and rewarding careers and lives, and encourages
students' active involvement in their education. General
education complements the major or professional program
to provide each student with a full educational experience.
