Hillary Wing-Richards, M.A.,
Ed.S., LPC is the Associate Director of Sexual Assault Prevention
at James Madison University.
She offers programming centered on the importance of self-worth,
communication and values in regard to sexual assault and sexual
harassment issues. At the university level, her programming
stresses the importance of risk reduction and prevention of sexual
assault and sexual harassment. She has been invited to
present her programs to organizations and school systems
nationwide. At the corporate level, Hillary offers
motivational workshops addressing communication, self-esteem, and
sexual harassment policies. Ms. Wing-Richards is presently
serving as Chair of the Alcohol Work Committee, which has been
charged by the President of the University to design, develop and
implement a two-year Foundational Plan. This Foundational
Plan is a result of the Attorney General's recommendation for all
Virginia colleges and universities to assess, evaluate, educate,
and change the culture on campuses regarding dangerous use of
alcohol by college students.
Ms. Wing-Richards received her
Masters Degree and an Educational Specialist Degree from JMU, so
she is well aware of the campus population and their needs.
She has developed and implemented a Sensitivity Training Program
for law enforcement officers working with victims of sexual
assault, sexual harassment, and domestic violence. She offers
officers and other personnel insight into the effects of
victimization and how it can impact investigation and results of
the crime. This has been presented to academies and agencies across
the country.
In addition to her work at the
university, which included hosting former Attorney General James
Gilmore for a conference on violent crime in Virginia, Ms
Wing-Richards has presented programs for the International
Conference on Campus Violence in Dallas as well as for the Annual
Virginia Conference on Violence. She has presented programs
for the VASPA and NASPA organizations. Local colleges, such
as Bridgewater College and Eastern Mennonite University, frequently
include her in their orientation programs as well as special
seminars. She is a guest speaker in the areas of sexual
assault and harassment, treatment and recovery, as well as a guest
speaker to college graduates.
Experience with victims of violent
crimes, along with her work with domestic violence and sexual
assault offenders, gives Ms. Wing-Richards a broad perspective on
the impact of violent crimes in our society. She has
developed and implemented an offender educational/counseling
program that is currently in use at JMU. She is a widely
recognized educator and lecturer and has presented programs to
students at Harrisonburg High School, Spotswood High School,
Staunton High School, as well as several of the elementary schools
and middle schools in the area.
Her commitment extends to the
community as well. In addition to providing a private
counseling practice, she is currently Chairperson of the
Harrisonburg/Rockingham County Crime Solvers Committee, serves on
the Rockingham County Citizen's Committee, and the Rockingham
Memorial Hospital Sexual Assault Response Team.
