AREAS OF EXPERTISE

Professor McCusker teaches all areas of graphic design. Her main areas of interest are typography, letterpress, artists’ books, book design and environmental design. Her recent research has centered around interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary design studies and letterpress printing and preservation.

PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE

Professor McCusker has been a faculty member at JMU since 2001. Previously, she worked for 8 years as a designer for several award-winning Chicago design firms and an adjunct professor at the Illinois Institute of Art-Chicago and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Currently, she is Co-Founder and Principle of Hopscotch Studio,a creative collective she formed with fellow design colleague Ronn Daniel. Her clients include the Black Rock Institute Press, the DuPont Corporation, the South River Science Team, Harlem Symphony Orchestra, Center for American Places at Columbia College, Women’s Studio Workshop, and The School of Art, Design and Art History at JMU.

She has started her own private letterpress studio, Press Girl Press. The press is operated out of her garage and she is teaching summer session courses to JMU art students. She owns a C&P Oldstyle and a Kelsey Excelsior table top press.
