Policies: Use of the Visual Resources Center

GUIDELINES FOR VISITING LECTURERS

To ensure that the lecture runs smoothly, visiting professors are asked to follow these formatting guidelines

IMAGE OWNERSHIP AND COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS

Once an image has been added to the fine arts slide collection, by either copy photography, digital scanning, or purchase, it becomes the property of the State of Virginia and subject to the Visual Resources Center policies and U.S. copyright laws. Slides from the JMU School of Art, Design and Art History collection cannot be reproduced in any form, or changed to another imaging format, except in compliance with the current copyright laws and fair use guidelines. It is implicit in the lending of slides that the borrower agrees not to authorize duplication or reproduction without permission from the VR Curator and assumes all responsibility for that restriction.

COPYRIGHT: FACE-TO-FACE TEACHING EXEMPTION

These exemption requirements will be adhered to in regard to video tape usage: 1) the showing of the video tape must be given by a teacher or a student; and 2) at a nonprofit educational institution; and 3) the teacher and the students must be face-to-face, which precludes the use of transmissions within one building; and 4) the showing of the video tape must be part of the regular instruction process and cannot be for recreational or non-curricular purposes; and 5) the video tape must be a lawfully made copy. Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

SLIDE USE: Art, Design and Art History COURSES

School of Art, Design and Art History faculty and graduate teaching assistants are responsible for pulling their own slides. Slides can be pulled for a course no more than one week in advance. Use your designated color cards when removing slides from the drawers. Return slides promptly to the Refile Box, located next to the color cards, when finished with a lecture. The VR Center staff will refile slides daily. Please ask if there is a question about the location of a slide. Occasionally, two people will need the same slide at the same time. If this conflict arises, a duplicate slide that has been pulled out of circulation can be used in an emergency.

STUDENT REPORTS USING SLIDES

Prior to assigning student reports requiring visual resources, the instructor must contact the VR Curator to schedule an orientation session for the entire class on slide collection usage. No student(s) will be allowed to pull slides if they have not attended an orientation session. Students must fill out a Student Loan Form, copy slides and labels, and are limited to a classtime loan period. Students should use their instructor's color card when pulling slides. Slide trays must be kept in the VR Center until classtime, and slides returned promptly after class. Students are subject to a $5 per slide fee for any lost slides.

SLIDE LOAN: OTHER DEPARTMENTS

Faculty from outside the School of Art, Design and Art History can access the collection during regular hours and are limited to a 48-hour loan period. A Faculty Slide Loan form must be filled out and slide labels copied. All borrowers are subject to a $5 per slide fee for any lost slides.

PREPARED LECTURE TRAYS: STORAGE AND BORROWING

Carousel trays for Art History courses, Art 200, and General Ed classes are kept in the VR Center until class time. Each box is labeled with the following information: instructor, section number, and time of class. Studio faculty may take prepared trays to their offices/studios for a 3-day loan period. All trays for student reports are to remain in the VR Center until classtime. If you need to pull a slide(s) from someone else's tray(s), put your color card in the tray slot with the title of the slide written on the card. The borrower is responsible for returning the slide(s) to the proper slot before the next class.

AV EQUIPMENT: USE AND STORAGE

Some departmental AV equipment is located in the first, tall wooden cabinet in the back of the room. The equipment stored in the cabinet consists of: 4 carousel projectors, a laptop computer, a 16mm movie projector, a filmstrip projector, a tape recorder, and a viewer/printer. The cabinet is open from 8:30 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Friday. The equipment housed in the VR Center includes: 2 Video projectors with VCR units, one with a laser disk player available on carts, 2 caramate carousel viewer/projectors used for previewing lectures and also available for checkout to offices for makeup tests, and an opaque projector. All faculty and student assistants are responsible for signing out the equipment, picking up the equipment at the signed time, and returning the equipment to the cabinet or room after use. Sign out the equipment on the white board in the front of the room. Read the board so that you do not sign up for the same equipment at the same time as someone else. If there is a conflict, equipment can be obtained through Media Resources. If you teach a night class and need equipment, be sure to list the evening time period on the white board, and the equipment will be left out of the cabinet for pick-up before lockup. Lecture rooms 107 and 240 and seminar room 210 each have two carousel projectors and a wireless remote control system locked in cabinets at the back of the rooms. Obtain security information from the school secretary. Overhead projectors are provided in all rooms. Lecture rooms 107, 210 and 240 are multimedia classrooms with computers, network connections, digital projection, CD ROM player, audio and video capabilities, and a document camera.

CAROUSEL TRAYS

Sign out all carousel trays on the yellow sheet by the white board. Trays are located in the storage bins under the slide cabinets. Return trays as soon as you are finished and write the date returned on the sheet.

COPY STAND, CAMERA, PORTABLE LIGHTS, STANDS, TRIPOD

The VR Center's copy photography schedule has first priority in the use of the copy stand. Faculty can use the stand at any other time; however, since it is located in the Curator's office, you must schedule a time to use it during office hours, or make special arrangements to access it. Copy stands are also available in the Educational Media Lab and Media Resources in Carrier Library for all students and faculty to use. Faculty and graduate students may check out the School of Art, Design and Art History's portable lights, stands, camera and tripod for photographing their artwork. Sign these out on the white board.

SECURITY

Whenever you leave the Visual Resources Center and no one else is in the room, please lock the door by turning the button on the back of the handle! Thank you.
